"Receiving this money means a healthier home for me and my children. We sleep and cook in the same room which is quite unhealthy because we use firewood which produces a lot of smoke that can cause respiratory diseases. The transfers will help me construct a separate kitchen thus keeping my family healthy. I will also purchase livestock to help me educate my children upto college level. "

"It has been two years since one of my neighbours who is well off gave me one of her dairy cattle to take care of as my own, after she saw me struggle buying milk due to my low financial status. This money will therefore enable me to pay for the cow so that i can own it fully. I also plan to add one more dairy cow for milking since i have seen the benefits of it. I usually sell 6litres of milk daily from one cow, 4litres in the morning and 2litres in the evening at ksh 30 per litre, an income that has seen me providing basic needs for my children. The remaining part of my transfer will ease my burden of paying school fees for my son who will be joining college next year. "

"To say that parents have sacrificed immensely for the sake of their children's education cannot be gainsaid. When one of my children joined college I did not think it would push me to dire straits the extent of selling a piece of land and livestock for her college fees. Though it's a good thing to secure education for my children, this desperate measure pushed me further to the brink of poverty. As at now we do not have much land to make a living save for my husband's employment and only source of income. Three more of my children are in high school and would too need to join college in a few years. My big worry is that there would be hardly anything to sell so as to cater for their education. This is the biggest hardship I've faced in my life. "

"Livestock act as a store for wealth as well as a source of income which we use to meet household needs. Receiving this money means adding two more dairy cows to my existing herd. Since my first born child will be joining high school next year, I do not have to worry about the source of funds now that GiveDirectly has given me a head start in form of financial security to invest towards it. "Our first born son is turning 14 years old and according to our culture,he needs a separate house given that he has grown old enough.I have therefore made a priority building a house for him. This will cost me approximately 25,000 Kenya shillings. For the rest of the transfer I will invest in livestock farming.I spend most of the time at home and therefore I will get ample time looking after the cattle. I will buy 5 sheep and 1 dairy cow.Livestock multiply very fast especially sheep and therefore it is a good investment that will help me pay school fees and satisfy other needs. The cow on the other side will provide milk for sale which is a good source of income."

"My expectation in the next six months is to buy a cow. I want to have a second source of income. I chose to buy a cow because very few people own cows in this region yet the demand for milk is very high. I am sure that this plan will go well because I have the necessary skill of keeping dairy cows and I also know where to get healthy cows that have a high milk production capacity."

"It is always my plan to reduce daily household expenditures and increase my income on savings. I expect in the next six months to improve my farming with the use of monthly transfers. I expect to employ modern mechanism in my farm like the use of hybrids inputs and machines in land preparation. This will improve my yields hence will have enough food and surpluses to sell to increase my income."

"I live in a very small house which is not spacious enough to host visitors. My kitchen serves the purpose of a living room too.Receiving this money from Give Directly will therefore help me to build another house which will ensure my visitors comfort. Owning another cow has been another wish for me.I have one cow and the milk I get is just for consumption. I need another cow so that I can get milk for sale. This will boost my income."

"Having the pair of oxen has made my life to be totally different. I have been having the desire to buy them for a long period of time but due to my financial status, I could not afford it. I believe and hope they will be of great help in ploughing my farm since the pair can take less days to plough an acre as compared to tilling myself. I believe I will get increased harvest products from the previous ones being that I prepared my farm in time unlike before when I used to do it myself. Apart from that, I will also hire them to my neighbors at a fee and get an income to help me sustain my family needs ."

"The fact that I cleared the fees arrears for my children, it has made my life to be so different. They have been sent home several times to collect school fees and due to my low income, they could stay at home even for weeks as I was still looking for the money to pay. This was really frustrating me I thought I had failed them as a parent. This is because they could miss classes and even exams and this was really affecting their academic performance. I am now hopeful and happier because ever since I received my first transfer all is well now because they are now studying without any difficulties. I could not not have done all this if it were not for GiveDirectly to come to my village. According to me GiveDirectly never failed us."
