"Financial instability has been my biggest challenge. For a living, I make aloe vera juice from the plant extract which I sell to get income. On average, I sell 2 jericans per month which earns me 2000 shillings. This income is however not sufficient because I have to pay 1900 shillings from it as fees for my daughter in school and also cater for food and other needs for the whole month. This has made it so hard for me to even build a house which is our direst need because of the ongoing rains."

"My expectation in the next six months is to have raised enough money to take my two sons to the secondary school comes January. The saving process we are starting will make this a possibility since we are planning to make it a routine saving every month. "

"With the brick-making project I am soon starting, I have great expectations in the near future. In the next six months, I expect to have started earning from the project and things will have changed. This project will be helpful in many ways since the little money I am planning to invest in will possibly yield a good profit."

"Financial indepencence is what this money means to me. My first priority is to buy a friessian dairy cow at ksh 45000 that will be my source of income upon selling milk daily hence the struggle of engaging in tedious casual jobs at my old age will come to an end. Practising poultry farming is my second plan upon receiving my second transfer. Selling poultry products will help supplement the income from selling milk hence improving my living standards. I will then build up savings from both projects that will latter enable me to construct a more spacious and comfortable house and also pay school fees for my two children, one in the university and another one in secondary school"

"For the last 10 years maize farming has been marred with a host of shortcomings which include pests like fall army warm and soil borne diseases. Life has been hard all this long, provided it is the only cash crop most relied upon by farmers in my community. This has resulted in over dependence on livestock milk production as source of food and income. It is our only lifeline but still cannot sustain my family of 6. My big worry is that my four children may soon drop out of school due to unlimited needs that I cannot meet. "

"Two of my sons have been sleeping in a neighbor's house for a long time. Due to interference there they've never had an ample time to study -which has affected their education. Using about Kshs 30,000 (300usd) of my first transfer I am going to build them a decent house with a solar powered light to help with their studies. This is what receiving this money means to me. "

"As a farmer the hardships I experience are mainly due to the frequent dry climatic conditions.During the dry season I face a lot of challenges. One is lack of clean water for domestic use and also for the cattle.I am usually forced to go and fetch water 5 km away.I carry using my back or pay for motorcycle transport (Ksh 50) per trip. This is usually very costly. The second challenge during the dry season is lack of feeds for the cattle and little harvest. At the end of it our income is limited and satisfying the family's basic needs becomes a big challenge."

"My life is different from how it was before GiveDirectly came into my life in that, I am no longer idle around. I remember when I used to depend on casual jobs, I would just sit and do nothing during the days that I couldn't get a contract. Nowadays when casual jobs are unavailable, I use my time well. I take that time to graze my cows that I recently bought using the transfers I got from Give Directly"

"Receiving this money means I will be able to start up a business from the nearby centre and have more money.
I have always worked hard hopping to get money with which to make my dream of starting a business come to pass but I never got the opportunity. I have never had capital to begin With.
However, with this chance that has come, I will be able to work and start a new life."
