"Constructing two houses has made our lives as a family so different. We enjoy privacy, we do not scramble for space when it comes to bedtime and also enjoys great shelter as we are no longer rained on. My children no longer fall sick because of the cold weather. These have happened courtesy of the transfers we received from GiveDirectly."

"Having this livestock is the biggest difference in my daily life. I only had a few goats before GiveDirectly came into my life. When I received this transfer, I bought more goats and also a cow to add to my cowshed. My expectation is that they will reproduce and increase in number. I will be selling them in future to generate income. This means my children will never be sent home due to lack of school fees."

"I remember very well it was around 2 am when I heard my phone vibrating loudly. I decided to wake up my helper so that he could check the content of the message. "Receiving this money means food security and better nutrition to the family. At the moment, I struggle a lot to put food on the table and this has been necessitated by a lack of proper means of cultivation. Here we hire oxen to help in tilling and since the demand is high and a few are available in the village, often times, we end up planting late and that has led to dismal yields year in year out. Therefore, purchasing my own oxen will bring that to an end. I will be in a position to timely cultivate and subsequently produce enough for the family and the surplus be sold to the outside market. I also intend to invest heavily in goat rearing. This will be my long term investment plan, having in mind that they breed rapidly, it is easy to gain from it within a very short period of time. For this, I will invest around ksh 40000 and be sure of maximum returns within 3 years. "

"Having my own retail shop has made my life to be so different. As a businesswoman, I have been longing to own it for a long period of time but I could not afford to construct one. I have been selling the products from door to door which was so tiresome and expensive as well because I used to hire someone to help me. Secondly, during winter seasons I was not able to move from place to place to sell them, during these seasons it was a loss to me. And it was really affecting me in so many ways because some of my family's baic needs I couldn't meet them. It is now a relief to me because I am hopeful and ambitious since I have my own permanent retail shop whereby I will be selling anything in any given period."

"I am a single mother of 8 and it is very tough for me raising up my children. With the casual jobs I do ,it is only enough to buy food while other needs like clothes, school fees and medication becomes a problem. When I work half day as a casual labourer in people's farms,I am usually paid Ksh 100.Talking of school fees,my children have been in and out of school due to arrears. This has really affected their education.I currently have a child in secondary school and another in college. For my son to join college it took the assistance of a village group(which I am a member) to pool resources since I could not have made it alone."

"My expectation in the near future is to be able to comfortably provide for my family. My family comes first and I need to make sure they have basic needs such as food and shelter. I also want to make good strategies so that my kids study well without being sent home more often for lack of school fees. I want to be in a state where I do not lack."
