"It was after I woke up that I decided to check my phone to know what time it was. When I realized that I had an unread message, I decided to read and know its content. Upon reading it, it dawned on me that GiveDirectly had finally honored their promise to me. I became so happy as I knew that my dream of living in a decent house would soon be fulfilled."

"I used to live in a mud wall house that I had struggled to make it decent and permanent. I was not able to fulfill my dream of furnishing my house due to the limited resources in our family. I had been so stressful living in my house especially during the rainy season since it's floor could leak making it unfit for our stay. We used to seek shelter in my neighbor's house every time it rains. When I received my transfer, I went ahead and purchased adequate sand, and cement to facilitate the renovation of my house. I have now upgraded it to a decent permanent house giving me peace because I do not have to worry in case of heavy rains like before. I see this as the biggest difference in my daily life and I thank GiveDirectly for having made this possible."

Christina
received a $530 second payment.
"I have always believed that the success of my children is brought about by giving them a quality education. Therefore, I did everything to make this dream achievable by selling most of my properties including the livestock to educate them because at that time my husband had retired and being that he was the breadwinner we opted to sell all the livestock which we had. With the transfer my life is different in that I have gotten a dairy cow which has already reproduced and now we manage to get six litters of milk for our consumption and sell some to my nearby neighbors and use the profits to buy food for my family's consumption."

Paskaline
received a $246 second payment.
"My expectation in the near future is to ensure that I finish building my house. I am tired of living in a semipermanent house that requires constant repair. By building this house I am sure of living a more comfortable life since the permanent house doesn't need to be maintained more often. Apart from that, I also want to further my studies by doing an electrical engineering course. I have been unable to continue with my studies; I decided to take care of my children first."

"My first born son is sitting for the national examination this year in Kapoleseroi secondary school, about 4 kilometers away from home. The challenge has been fees arrears of Kshs 28,500 (285usd) he owes the school. Thanks to GiveDirectly I am going to spend the same amount of my first transfer to settle this debt done and dusted so my son gets an ample time studying in preparation for the task ahead, because I want him to pass and join university next year. In addition I will use Kshs 11,500 (115usd) is clearing arrears of my daughter in the same school who is in form 3.
From the second transfer I intend to use Kshs 30,000 (300usd) to buy a dairy cow. Consequently I would not have to go out for manual jobs in the village but tend after my cow. For the first time I will be in a position to make savings for my children's education."

"With the help of the transfers I received, I was able to improve the once small poutry project I had into an income-generating activity that now supports me financially. I am now able to supply chickens to different people and hotels around my area and can proudly say that I have a stable source of income. I also managed to fence my compound entirely which has improved our security as a family but most of all kept my poultry away from the hungry mouths of wild cats that prevented the poultry project from growing before. Al laf these could not have been possible if I had been lucky enough to benefit from the project and all I have is plenty of the thanks to Give Directly."

"My desire even before GiveDirectly cam, was to own a decent house. I used to feel dismal when I compared my livelihood with the neighbor's and how I wished to change this situation but there was nothing I could with the little earnings I made that was not enough to sustain my four family members. I almost slid into depression seeing my children being sorted in rain water or staying up during the night at a certain point in the house where they could not get rained on. Having bought the necessary building materials and resources that will facilitate the construction of my house. I am happy and peaceful knowing that my children will no longer frequent the hospital due to disease that resulted from cold. The fact that I will own a house like my neighbors also gives me a sense of satisfaction."

Zachary
received a $22 twentieth payment.
"Having to work together with my neighbour during the ploughing season does not work out well for me because it is very inconveniencing and time-consuming as we have to work on both of our farms together. I need to be spending as little time as possible on the farms so that I can have time to tend to my business, therefore, I need to have four bulls to allow me to work on my own without having to rely on my neighbour. This is why I have plans of buying one more bull so that I can have four as I now have only three that I cannot work with. I hope that in the next six months, I will have managed to buy the bull so that I can be able to work independently."

"My dream in life is to construct a spacious house for my family. Since I was married 3 years ago, I have not been able to construct a good one due to financial constraints and hence my family has been seeking refuge from a neighbor. In April I constructed a small structure to save me from the shame that I suffered for that long. The structure I presently call my house is very small to accommodate my family and at the same time I use it as my kitchen. Receiving this money means the realization of my dream owns a decent house."
