"I thank GiveDirectly for their financial support. I have been married for four years now without a child. I realized later on that I could not conceive due to complications of my reproductive system. Due to limited resources, I never visited any hospital to seek any medications thus lived a miserable hopeless life thinking that my system failure couldn't be corrected. The stigma and unrespect from my society slowly put me in depression that I had lost hope of getting out of it. When I received my first transfer, I felt so happy since the hope of getting out of my depression was now seen as possible. I took part of it to visit an expert and I feel this is the biggest difference in my life. I am grateful and happy because I went through the surgery and I am sure that I will be able to conceive and have children for the first time. I feel happy since this has taken away the shame I had carried for long, bring back the lost joy in my life and made me worth again in my society. Thank you GiveDirectly."

"I will finally fulfill my wish of building a more spacious and comfortable house that will cost me 300USD upon receiving this money. The one roomed mud grass-thatched house we currently live in as a family of six has limited space, hence forcing my three teenage children to spend their nights at their grandmother's place since culture has it that grown up children should sleep in a separate house from parents. The roof of my hut also leaks in water during rainy seasons hence exposing my children to pneumonia and other cold related diseases. 250 USD will enable me to buy a dairy heifer cow that will reproduce after around one year hence we will be able to sell milk from it and the cost of buying milk for family consumption will come to an end. The remaining part of my transfer will ease the struggle of paying next year's school fees for my two children in secondary school who are required to pay 170 USD each throughout the year. "

"Starvation! In my community maize planting season only occurs once a year. Being an ASAL area, there is a perennial drought for most parts of the year. As a result, harvesting low yields in my 0.5 acre piece of land is not sufficient to sustain my family needs till the next planting season the following year. This results in dire consequences like lack of food, clothing and inconsistent attendance of school for two of my children due to hunger. This is the biggest hardship I've faced in my life. "

"When I receive this money,my first priority is buying a dairy cow.I currently have one heifer and my aim is expanding my dairy farm bit by bit.My desire is to sell 10 litres of milk by mid next year.I want to buy an improved breed so that I can ensure high milk yield.Such a cow will cost me approximately Ksh 30,000(300 USD).The money I will save from the sale of milk will help me pay school fees for my two children.I also have a plan of farming tomatoes. This is a rare kind of farming in this area .I want to try it out since tomatoes are on high demand and again tomatoes take a short time to ripen.I will start with 0.2 acres of land for a start before expanding. This will depend on the outcome."

"As a farmer,I have limited space to practise profitable farming.I live in 2 acres of land which I share with my children.I have six sons and as they grow old, each one needs to have his share.Currently, two of them have their own share since they have married.I get very little from my farm whereas I still have the burden of paying school fees. This has been a big hardship for me.I have three children still going on with their studies and two others who are at home because I do not have money for them to proceed to colege.I am a widow and all the burden is on me."

"Financial constraint is the biggest hardship that I face.Had I had money, I would have been able to enrol my daughter into college 5years ago when she completed school. I would have been spared the agony of seeing her waste so many years of her youth engaging in casual jobs just so that she can get some income to help me raise her siblings."

"I am skilled motorbike rider and for the past 1year, this skill has enabled me to take care of my family. Since I do not have my own motorbike and I do not have a direct employer, I am forced to work as a squad where by I rely on someone else not riding theirs to operate. The proceeds are good in that I normally ferry charcoal and per trip I manage to save Ksh.1500.If only I had my motorbike my income would be consistent but now that I have to rely on others, I can even go for a week without getting the opportunity. With this money, I will spend ksh. 80,000 to purchase a second hand motorbike that a friend is selling and with the rest, I will complete construction of my current house."
