"Subsistence farming is my only source of income but I do not produce enough. This is because I lack better farming equipment and I do not have enough money to hire, hence I only till 0.5 acres. This portion produces food that can last only for 3 months. I can simply say I am food insecure. To curb this situation, I will purchase a pair of oxen and an ox plough. This project has been my biggest ambition for a very long time. It will help me scale up farming and also generate income whenever I hire them at a fee."

"The thing that has changed my life most is seeing that I managed to treat my wife and she is now health and has no more complains about her health. She has gone back to operate normally with all her chores. Before recieving this money, all I was remaining to do was sell off or mortgage my farm land to raise money to treat my wife because the treatment was really expensive. "

"My life is different now in that I was able to get back my farm land that I will now largely cultivate on without being snared at. Prior to getting this transfer, I only had a small part to farm and my family in most cases was stuck by famine. In addition to this, I am happy that I have also managed to uplift the standard of my living because I was able to buy some household items (Solar, bed, mattress, utensils among others)that I did not have. Before getting this money, I used to get to an extent of begging utensils, chairs among other things from the neighbourhood."

"My life has been transformed for the best. I acquired tangible items that I did not own my entire life. I feel much happier and composed because I now own basic household items such as a solar lighting system. Previously, we had to use a small torch for lighting at night. This was inadequate and costly to maintain."

"The cash transfers have uplifted me from poverty. I had no property of my own and I was miserable. Agriculture being our major economic activity, it was very demanding for me because I had no oxen then. However, I acquired oxen which have simplified farming at home. I am very grateful because I had no hopes of ever acquiring oxen."

"I sleep comfortably on a nice bed courtesy of GiveDirectly. I eat well and drink tea like a normal human being compared to the past when I had to toil and look for manual labour so as to get food. Life was very difficult and unpredictable."

"I was able to clear all the debts that we had accumulated while educating our children. We had secured a number of loans and three pieces of farm land had been attached as collateral. However, we repossessed them after paying off these loans. This has been a great achievement to the family. Secondly, we also paid our son's dowry since his inlaws had waited for over four years."

"At my old age, (90years) i depend on my children for food and other needs thus receiving this money means self independence since i plan to spend 350 usd of my transfer to buy a dairy cow that will be my source of income upon selling milk daily. I also intend to use 300 usd to build a three roomed iron roofed house since i am no longer able to travel long distance in search for grass for thatching the roof of my old small hut due to my age. I will then use the remaining part of my transfer to buy food and take care of my medication"

"I dropped out of primary school while in my 3rd year of my studies due to lack of financial support from my parents in paying school fees. I had always wished to study upto the university level and study teaching as a career, a dream that was rendered futile then. I wish i had completed my studies and get employed by the government for a sustainable source of income but now i engage in casual jobs to earn a living"
