"I earn about 4000 shillings a month from my charcoal business. This amount is too little to cater for the education of my 2 boys in secondary school and my girl who will be joining them early next year. In a term, am required to pay 9500 shillings for each which has been next to impossible given the other needs we have to meet such as food. This has led to a build up of huge fee balances for example one of my sons owes the school 15,050 shillings. "

"Receiving this money means a food secure home for us. I will be able to buy oxen and an ox plough at a cost of 40,000 shillings. This will help me expand farming in my 2 acre piece of land hence increasing my yields. With the rest of the transfers, I will build an extra bedroom for my 6 boys who are heading into their teen years and pay part of their fees in school next year. "

Winny
received a $22 twentieth payment.
"In the next six months, I would have bought a cow and will now save part of my earnings from casual jobs to start poultry farming. I intend to start this as I can manage running my home with the little income which I usually get from casual jobs. With the two sources of income, that is from the cattle's milk and my poultry farm, I will permanently stop doing casual jobs because I will now be financially stable"

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a dairy cow. I used to buy milk from my neighbors and it was so costly for me. I depend on the casual jobs in the village and the amount of money that I get is so small and can only gather for basic needs. Currently, I no longer buy milk because I have a dairy cow. The cow gives me enough milk for my family use and I sell the surplus milk to earn an income to meet other needs including saving to pay part of the school fees for my children. I am so much happy that I have hope that My children would not be sent home to collect school fees like before. This was affecting their performance in school. I used to go for casual jobs in the morning and come back home at late night and this was denied me time to bond with my family but right now I have devoted half of my time on my own activities at home and this gives me chance to interact well with them."

received a $469 initial payment.
"I am extremely happy because I purchased agricultural tools. Previously, I had no oxen and ox-plough of my own. I had to carry out casual labour in exchange for oxen and ox-plough to till my farm lands. I am now very confident that I will produce abundant food crops with these agricultural inputs. I am very grateful to GiveDirectly for the cash transfers."

"The most evident impact is that I have acquired household items most especially a bed, a mattress and livestock that I could not afford in the past. I had no plans of ever acquiring livestock in the near future. I am glad that the cash transfer has made it possible within a shortest period of time."

Luka
received a $39 twelfth payment.
"I only depended on casual construction jobs before the project was launched in my area of residence. The jobs were not mostly available hence my income was very limited. It was very tough providing decent meals to my family and paying the bills was even tougher. After I started receiving the transfers, I started a business on shoes which has been a good financial source for my needs and family requirements. As at the moment, I am even confident that I will be able to pay for my daughter's school fees with ease when she joins high school."

"I spent my transfer on savings. I will use the savings to boost my PlayStation business which is picking up well in my area. I started the business with part of my transfer from GD and I feel I can earn more when I have two of them. This is why I am saving my transfers to buy another one."

Alex
received a $39 twelfth payment.
"Before the transfers, I did not have any source of income which I relied on. I used to depend on causal work which was very inconsistent and paying very little. I tried taking a loan to help me set up a business but due to low credit reference, I was not able to. I was giving up on the idea of starting a business until GD came to my life. I did not know GD would honour their word easily as it happened. When I first received my transfer, I knew God had answered my prayers. I have been using my monthly transfers to boost my business and I know by the time the transfers will stop, my business will be much stable to help me in future.business"

"My next goal is to save and use the savings in buying a motorcycle. I would want to have a more stable source of income which can help me sustain my family needs well. For me, I see the motorcycle as the best business idea which can help me achieve my goals."
