How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The fact that I managed to clear the huge school fees balance for my children makes the biggest difference in my life. This is because I have been struggling as a widow to make sure they get food a well as getting their school. It reached a point I could not afford to raise the fees and they were forced to stay home and this affected their academic performance. I am glad the financial support from GD enabled me to send them back again to school. Also, the pair of oxen that I now own has made my farming activities much easier because I have been using my own hands all those years and it was tiring with low harvesting products. It is now a major relief to me and for my family at large.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did everything so perfectly and we were all satisfied. The staff gave u enough education about how we best we can utilize the transfer and also how to secure our money. Also, there was transparency in such a way that everyone understood the aim of the organization in that particular village. Dure to this I never heard any complaints from the village about the organization. I do not see any part GD failed us.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent KES 11000 of my second transfers on buying livestock such as an ox. I then paid the school fees of KES 40000 for my children who are in secondary school. Previously they have been staying because of the huge fees balances and because I depend on the casual jobs the money was little I was earning was not enough to pay school fees in time, most of the time I had struggled a lot since I am a widow. The remaining amount of money, I am using it in buying enough foodstuffs for, my family.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The fact that I cleared the school fees balances for my children has brought the biggest difference in my daily life. Actually, the money came in a good time, the exams were approaching and they had been sent home to collect school fees. I wasn't happy at all because I was sure they would miss the exams as they used to do. Being the breadwinner, I had to struggle and make sure they get their daily meal and sending them to school as well which was not that easy. Due to this when I received my first transfer from GiveDirectly, my first thought was to clear the school fees arrears in order for them to sit for their exams as the rest. Since I am illiterate, my wish was to see my children getting a good education so that they can have a brighter future with their future generation. My dreams are now coming true. Courtesy to GiveDirectly.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received a Mpesa confirmation message from GiveDirectly at exactly 6 am. I wish you could see how happy I was. I quickly started planning on how I could utilize the money.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying a pair of oxen. I have been wishing to own them for long but I could not afford it. Secondly, I bought some building materials such as building poles, iron sheets, and some nails. This was for the purpose of constructing a new house for my two sons. Previously we used to share the same house and it was very small it could accommodate us all. I later cleared some hospital bills for my elder son because he had been admitted. I also paid school fees for my children and the little amount of money that had remained, I bought some foodstuffs.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will be able to pay part of fees for my 2 children in secondary school and 1 who is joining them next year. This will cost about 60,000 shillings in total since they also have arrears from last year. The rest will be invested in oxen and goats which I can sell later to further enable me meet their educational needs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My best time of day is in the evening when I get back home from my farm which is about 2 kilometers away. Having harvested some vegetables from the farm, am able to prepare supper, eat and rest.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I earn about 4000 shillings a month from my charcoal business. This amount is too little to cater for the education of my 2 boys in secondary school and my girl who will be joining them early next year. In a term, am required to pay 9500 shillings for each which has been next to impossible given the other needs we have to meet such as food. This has led to a build up of huge fee balances for example one of my sons owes the school 15,050 shillings.
