"I spent part of my transfer on buying some livestock such as a dairy cow and a pair of oxen at a total of KES 46000. These are now the living assets that I can lean on just in case of any emergency that may arise. I then bought some building materials such as building poles, iron sheets, nails, and some threads. This was purposely for the renovation of my house which was in a poor state. It had a leaky roof and some walls were also very weak and they were almost falling. The remaining amount of money, I use it in buying enough foodstuffs for my family"

"Before GiveDirectly came into my life my house was almost falling because of its condition. It had some cracking walls and the roof had also worn out. During the winter seasons, I had to seek shelter from my neighbors which were a so stressful. In addition, there was no security because most of the time my properties were stolen as a result of its state. Having have renovated it has brought the biggest difference and it gives me joy living with my family without any worries. I am so grateful to GiveDireclty since I cam now access to good shelter."

"We decided to spend part of the money we received to buy a 3000litres water tank because we live very far a way from the nearest water source which is a river. We had to borrow our neighbour's donkey each time we needed to fetch water to help us bring home more water in a single trip. The water was also not very safe because the river is the drinking source for all the animals in the region and a place for other activities for those who live around the river such as washing clothes and bathing. Having to use the same water for domestic purposes such as cooking and drinking endangered our health so we purchased the water tank to help us harvest pure rain water. We also purchased a heifer as a long term investment because after a few years,we will not have to purchase milk for own consumption and we will still be able to earn extra income by selling the excess."

"I spent the money I received from GiveDirectly on buying building materials that I used to build a new house. My old house was almost collapsing given that I used second hand iron sheets. I was scared it could collapse any time on us. I now have a good better house. It is new, strong and very spacious. I also bought goats that I am rearing and will hel me educate my children."

"Having have completed my house has made my daily life to be totally different. This is because previously in a small temporary house which was very small it could not accommodate all my family members. I have been yearning to have my own decent house for years but due to financial difficulties, these dreams never came true. The previous has some leaking roof and during the rainy seasons, I never had peace. Also, the walls had some holes all over. During the nights the breezes could easily penetrate and this affected our health because my children developed some chest problems as a result of the cold. Therefore after receiving the transfers, I managed to complete the new house which I had started constructing some months back. All I can say is that we are now living happily with my family and I no longer worry about the rains nor our health problems."

"Having my own semi-permanent house has really brought the biggest difference in my life. I have been longing to have my own house for a long period of time but because of my financial status, I could not afford it. Being a widow life has been so tough for a couple of years. I had to leave my late husband homestead and return back to my parents because of what I was going through. Since my parents were also poor I had to sleep at my brother's house together with my four children. I was not comfortable at all because my brother had a family as well. Therefore after receiving my first transfer constructing my own house was my first priority. I am extremely grateful now because I am living comfortably with my children courtesy of GiveDirectly."
