"The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is food insecurity. Affording three meals a day is a dream and this is attributed by the unpredictable weather patterns in my area."

"My biggest hardship in life is lack of a stable source of finances to cater for my household obligations like buying food for my family, living in a descent house and paying school fees. Being a divorcee and left with six children, putting a meal on the table for my kids, assuring my children a better shelter and paying school fees has been a nightmare."

"My biggest hardship is lack of a reliable source of income. I am a widow who does casual jobs such as tilling peoples land. This job is tiresome and earns me 200 shillings per 1 acre. The amount is not enough to fulfil all our needs such as school fees. This is the reason which has made me fail to clear all fees arrears."

"Lack of a reliable source of income is my biggest challenge. I am a casual labourers who does construction work at our nearby center. In a day I make 500 shillings, this amount is enough to sustain us with food only and I have failed to fulfill other needs such as school fees."

"When I receive this money,I will venture into livestock farming. Livestock does well in this region especially when there is enough pasture. I would like to do it differently by buying a more improved breed at a cost of 250 USD. Most farmers here rear the traditional breeds which produce less milk. I will then build a kitchen separate from the main house so as to avoid smoke in the main house. Part of the money will also go into paying school fees for my child with special needs who learns in a special school. I pay close to 200 USD per term."

"When I receive this money I will build a house because the main house fell due to heavy rainfall forcing me to spend three months living in the kitchen with my 3 young children. I will use 50,000 Kenya shillings to build a three-roomed house for my family. I will use some amount to buy food and then save some to pay school fees for my children when schools resume."

"Excluding the past two years, I have been living in abject poverty for the better part of my marriage life. During those times, we used to skip one meal a day, my kids being sent out of school dues to fee arrears and literally buying all sorts of household items. This was because together with my husband, we used to solely depend on casual jobs to cater for the basic needs of the family. The jobs were unreliable and the little we got could not satisfactorily fend for all of us."
