"We always face shortage of food each farming season as we do not harvest enough. This problem now has been exacerbated by the pregnancy of my wife. She now needs more good food than before. If we had enough, we could have sold some and get some money to buy other needs. This is always our biggest hardship."

"My daughter in-law and I decided to contribute $280 of our second transfers each for the purchase a new motorbike. The motorbike is assisting us in getting water for my family since we are experiencing drought at the moment. Also, we engage it in motorbike taxi which earns us a living of 2.5 dollars per day. In addition, I bought a bed and mattress since I was using traditional beddings which were worn out and was not comfortable to lie on.The remaining amount assisted me to purchase enough food for my family."

"My wish had been to providing quality education for my children so they may have a better future, however, I am encountering a lot of financial challenges to fulfill my dream. Therefore, after getting my transfer, my priority was to clear the fees balance of $150. Also, I had a wish to open a water tap in my homestead since there is a water shortage after the dams dried off due the drought conditions in our area. Currently, we are dependent on tap water and I invested $150 on purchasing the materials needed for this project. Lastly, I bought solar and purchased food for my family."

"I spend my transfer on purchasing two local dairy cows for $300. This because I did not have any livestock or any future investment for my family. I will have enough milk supply for my family. I plan to sell them when they multiply to assist me in educating my children. With the remaining amount I spent it to clear the fees of my two children who are in secondary school."

"My life is different than it would have been if I had never received the transfer in that my child was able to get proper medication after breaking his leg. The transfer helped me a lot since I didn't have money. I was able to pay school fees for my children. Furthermore, I am now sleeping in comfortable beddings unlike before where I use to sleep with old sacks."

"Since GiveDirectly came to our village, I have been grateful to see the huge transformation around. The money received was so impactful and in my opinion, it was work well done for GiveDirectly to have taught us in the initial meetings how best we can handle the finances as we plan on what we needed to invest in as we avoid losses. Everyone adhered and dedicated all their efforts to the good ideas they had.
Even though we managed to fix the household issues we had, it has been my feeling that GiveDirectly would have done us best if at all they would have sorted at least a common utility project which could be facilitating the conveyance of piped water to every household. This would have solved the great challenge that we can't handle on our own as everyone has plans for the amount received and never willing to contribute towards a common course.
It also seemed unfair that many single fathers whose children are under the care of their grandmothers. These are the fathers who are always out trying to make ends meet for their children and were unfortunate not to have been considered."

"The decision made by GiveDirectly to disperse the support in monetary value was a great favor to me. This was a chance to decide what to spend on. I can't complain at all since what I have seen happen few months after the transfer is a clear testimony that GiveDirectly has done a great job."

"I spent part of my second transfer on buying livestock such as a dairy cow which cost KES 15000. This has been my desire to keep it in my compound but becasue of my financial status, I could not afford it. Also, I purchase an ox plough at KES 8500 for the oxen that I had initially bought with the first transfers. In addition to that, I cleared school fees for my children's KES 4000. I am glad they are no longer been interrupted with their studies anymore. With the remaining amount, I bought enough foodstuffs for my children and it's a relief now because we at least two meals which were not possible during those days."
