"I have ever had a temporary house that is not spacious such that, it can not accommodate my belongings, also to a sitting room. I have desired to construct a spacious one that at the moment is at its superstructure level but I can not complete it due to lack of money. I will, therefore, spend utmost $600 to ensure the house is done. The remaining amount will help me to buy 1 indigenous dairy cow that will produce milk for my household consumption and also to sell the surplus to earn income. Hence this is generally what receiving this money means to me."

"Little income compared to my needs is what has been my biggest hardship. I am teacher and my spouse is a driver. We have been supporting other relatives especially in their education. Currently I have a sister in law that I pay school fees for. I have three children of my own who are also in school."

"Financial instability is the biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life. This is because I am a housewife and I majorly depend on my husband who is doing casual labor which is not consistent and his income is very low, which can not support fully the needs of the family. We periodically skip meals and borrow from relatives something that ashames me."

"When I was diagnosed with this heart condition the doctors recommended that I shouldn't burden myself with a lot of work and in this place you must toil hard to get life going. My husband abandoned me and married a second wife and I was depressed about it though I have recovered. So having a weak body and being abandoned by my husband has been the biggest hardship."

"My husband lost his job early last year after he became sick and he could no longer perform any work. Life became tough because he was the only breadwinner in the family. Currently, we depend on substance farming which earns is little coins. Therefore, lack of a reliable source of income is our biggest hardship."

Julius
received a $507 initial payment.
"When I received my transfer, I spent USD 390 to build a more spacious house for my family. I settled on this since the one we had was grass thatched and small hence could not accommodate us comfortably. Due to this, we had no privacy as parents since we used to sleep in the same room with our children. Also, I bought two goats at USD 80. These are investments to me that I can depend on in case of financial crisis especially in paying school fees for my children. I spent the remaining USD 80 on food and other household necessities."

"In my opinion GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community to build better houses and to buy dairy cows. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well."

Simon
received a $506 initial payment.
"I spent part of the money I received from GiveDirectly on building a better house. I used to live in a small grass thatched house which could not host all the family comfortably. I also paid school fees for my children in various schools. The rest of the money I bought food and clothes for my children. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard."
