"In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well in sending unconditional cash transfers directly to our phones. This has enabled us to decide on our own how to best utilize the transfer. Through the transfer, my life has changed for the better. I was able to construct a decent house in a very short time something that I would not have done without the transfer. In addition, my children are learning with being interrupted due to school fees. In my opinion, I do not see anything that it does not do well."

"I live in a house that have all the rooms occupied with different family members. Sometimes when visitors come to me and decide to pass the night or spend more time with me, I can be really embarrassed because I don't have any other place to lodge them. When I get the transfer, I will like to build a house for myself. When I have a house for myself, I will be happy and will always have more rooms to accommodate strangers and visitors."

"Presently, I am the Town Chief but because of my age, I can't attend programs and ceremonies that are held in distant towns, like I used to because I don't have the strength like when I was younger. I have to take my own time to go to these programs or most times, don't attend them. This is a serious challenge for me because I am not actively involved with unfolding activities amongst my kinsmen again. To even work on my farm now, is a serious problem for me but I just have to force myself because if I don't do it, me and my grandchildren will die of hunger."

"" My first problem is the sleeping place. The house is leaking. When rain is falling all our things can get wet. As you can see, we have all these tubs and buckets here because of the rain. It better to have good place to sleep, then you will not get sick, and you can find food for your family"."

received a $502 initial payment.
"It was around 10 o'clock, I was on my way back home from fetching water at the water pan which is located approximately 2 kilometers from my house. I heard continuous message alert on my phone, I stopped ridding the bicycle to check the messages. Upon checking, I learned that it was the transfer GiveDirectly had promised to sent us during the enrollment stage. I felt extremely happy for receiving my transfer which would transform my life for the better. I went home to inform me wife about the good news and we jointly celebrate and thank God for the opportunity."

"I am a livestock farmer, I had wished to expand my farming by purchasing more goats but I lack money to accomplish the dream. I spent KES 15,000 on acquiring 4 more goats this is because I had sold most of them to support my children's education. I also used KES 10,000 to purchase a bed and mattress. Formerly, I was using a traditional bed and old sacks as bedding which was not comfortable, and always felt ashamed whenever I received guests. I had to move from one neighbor to another to seek proper shelter for my guest. I also used KES 7000 to support my kid's education by purchasing books and school uniforms, they use to go to school with casual clothes something that makes me feel embarrassed as a parent. I also bought 3pairs of clothes for every member of my family, we were wearing worn-out clothes. The remaining amount assisted us to purchase adequate food for the family because we are experiencing drought and famine our area at the moment."
