"My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfer in that I am living a better life. Through the transfer, I was able to restore my dignity after constructing a decent and spacious house for the family. Previously, I was living in a small house which was not enough to accommodate both the family members and our properties. Despite it being small, it was leaking and it serves as kitchen, sitting room and bedroom at the same time. Every night my grown up children had to seek refuge from our neighbour something that lower my self-esteem. Furthermore, I was able to purchase a 2 acres of land something that have gave me a peace of mind since I no longer have dispute with our neighbour over the land issues. In addition, I was able to bought a solar panel for lighting the house as well as using it to charge my neighbours' phones at a fees. Before, I was using spotlight which did not give me much light and relatively expensive since I was require to buy 2 dry cells at KES 20 daily."

"The first plan I have to do with the cash transfer is to build a house for my children for future use. If there is a balance left, I will also pay my children tuition with it."

received a $502 initial payment.
"I spent a larger portion of my transfer on buying materials iron sheet at KES 26250, poles at KES 5250, nails and timber KES 1000. This was for the construction of a new house because the previous one was collapsing as a result of its weak walls and old grass thatched roof. With my seven family members, some had to seek shelter in our relative's houses every night. I also used KES 3000 of the money on paying the mason as his labour charge. In addition, I paid school fees (KES 1000) for my children who were about to sit for their exams. With the remaining amount, I am using it to buy enough foodstuff for my family and other household items like utensils which we were lacking before."

"The biggest difference in my life is that I managed to clear school fees arrears for my children even paid in advance for the next semester. Since I never had the opportunity to go to school, it has always been my dream to see my children getting a good education for them to have a brighter future together with their generations. It has been a tough journey because most of the time they were always home for a fee. Due to the financial difficulties they had to stay for weeks and they could always miss exams and two had opted to drop out f school which demoralized me greatly. Being a casual labourer (burning and selling charcoal) earning KES 200 in a day I was not able to pay the fees o time ad this resulted in the big balances. I have been trying to apply for the government bursaries but this was in vain. Therefore seeing them going to school every day with the rest makes me happier and hoping that someday the property life shall come to an end through them. I would not have accomplished all these if it were not for GiveDirectly coming into my life. May our Good continue to bless GD for transforming my life and those of my village mates."

"Happiness was immeasurable when I received the first transfer, I was really glad that the opportunity to demolish the old hut and putting up a stronger one had come. My wife also felt so good on receiving the news as we were home together that morning, and it felt so good that the first thing that came out of her mouth after that confirmation was the proclamation of the hope to move out of the old house and put up new and spacious one."
