"I spent my transfers to clear my high school arrears so I could obtain my high school certificate. I completed high school in the year 2017 but my leaving certificate was retained due to a fee balance of 10000 KES. I was orphaned at a young age and the only sibling I have left is my elder brother whom I have lived with here in Mathare, almost all my life. I used to do casual jobs to pay my school fees, with some help also from my brother. I have always dreamt of going to college to study Electrical Engineering, but my high school certificate was retained in school. I was happy when I received my transfers as I knew I would finally get my certificate. I also spent the transfers to pay a debt of 5000 KES that I owed my elder brother."

"Since I received the transfers, I have felt as though I am at a different level now. I find myself wanting to hang out and interact more with entrepreneurs, and people who are business minded. I have even realized that I no longer desire to hang out with my old friends where we used to sit and spend most of our time. I hope to grow in business and to grow my businesses so I can be very wealthy and successful in future."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am clear of debts. before I received my payments from GiveDirectly, my income was so poor that I ended up accumulating debts in shops Ias I took daily supplies on credit. Most of the shops around where I live had already incurred losses as I could not pay what I owed them. I ended up borrowing more in order to pay them. This further aggravated my situation to almost hopelessness. But when the transfers came, I paid all those that I owed to people and now live freely unlike when it used to worry me because whenever I met them they would demand their money."
