"My life has really changed as compared to how it was before I started receiving the transfers. This is because I used to rely mainly on my farming activities to earn an income and even sort my children's school fees and this was never enough. I used to strain and on several occassions, I was overwhelmed. But thanks to GD's support I have been able to meet all my household needs."

"Receiving this money means that I will be able to buy a cow.I have been depending on my son who has one cow to get a cup of milk daily. He also has a family and his young children need the milk in the diet.I therefore only get only enough to make tea and do not have any to include in my other meals which would be really necessary in my old age.I will also buy some goats as a way of saving up the money"

"Lack of a sustainable source of income is my biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life, something that has forced me to dwell in an illegal activities like carcoal burning in order to earn me income to cater for my family's basic needs. "As a widow with no source of income and too old to engage in any economic activity, taking care of my grandchild who was abandoned by her mother has been quite challenging. I mostly rely on neighbors and well wishers for our needs such as food, clothing, water and her educational wants such as books, uniform, fees etc. It pains me that I cannot provide for her but am grateful GiveDirectly's timely intervention will ensure I give my granddaughter a better future. "My biggest hurdle has been shortage of finances to support my children's education. One of the adverse cases was my second born daughter Hadija who completed primary but could not transition to secondary school for lack of fees. She later got pregnant and now has two children aged 4 and 2. Luckily, she got an opportunity to join secondary school last year but after one year we yet again were unable to pay for her fees. She is now in a hopeless state wondering if her thirst for education will ever be quenched. "

"I am a small business woman selling maize in a nearby town during its market days every Monday. This is my only source of income that provides for our household needs and my children's education. At the moment one of them is in secondary school while two more are in primary. The latter two would soon transition to secondary and will demand more money for their education. There is hardly enough profits to make from my small business. My greatest fear is to be overwhelmed by their education costs from which I may have to sell my assets to facilitate. This is the biggest hardship I've faced in my life. "

"To me, education is the best thing any parent can give to his/her child. This is something that I never got because, at that time, my parents didn't lay much emphasis on it. And as a result, am struggling with odd jobs to make ends meet. I now understand the benefits of education and what it means when a child is not put through education. This transfers came at the time when I was in deep thoughts on where I will get my son's school fee come next year when he will be joining his secondary level. It is, therefore, a sign of relief knowing that school fee for my children will never be a problem in the near future. And to further this good gesture from Give Directly, I plan to invest part of my transfers in livestock. I believe this is a safer way to invest because livestock rearing is highly practiced in this region due to favorable climatic conditions. Apart from that, I intend to construct a spacious house for the family. The one we are currently living in is small and cannot accommodate all of us. And that is what receiving this money means to me."
