"Owning livestock is a dream that I have always wished to come true. However, it has been like a fairy tale to me because I do not have the money to purchase them. From my earnings I have to prioritize between food and investment where the former always win. To achieve my dream, I will use the transfer to purchase cows and goats for rearing. This will make my transfer useful because they will multiply and give me returns in future."

"My wife opted to separate me six years ago because I have no any source of income to sustain the family. This has depressed me a lot due to the loneliness and the burden of being the only care taker for my children. I am forced to stay at home, something that can not give me any opportunity to go and search for jobs outside our village. Therefore, I consider lack of parental support from my wife as the biggest hardship I have ever faced."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now own a big hotel. Previously, I have been working in a friend's hotel which I was getting a low salary which was not enough for the family's basic needs. I now feel great because I have my own. I am hoping with time my life will never be the same again. Because currently, the business is doing so well. This will improve my financial status and I will be able to pay school fees for my children and also cater to their basic needs."

"On my usual day, when I have a work appointment, as plumber, I leave my house at around seven in the morning and work until late in the evening around 11 pm, it mostly depends with the the number of houses I have to visit and how fast I work. When I am not working, I wake up in the morning, I take my breakfast and at around 11 am. I leave the house and go to my place of business, which is also where we hang out as a group as we catch up. I sell sodas and mostly work for a half a day and when my brother is around, I leave him to operate the business. I take a walk mostly to the chief camp, to catch up with some of my friends who work in the administration department, and other friends around Mathare. Later in the evening, I go back home take my dinner and retire to bed. In my free time, I catch up with my group friends, we play ludo as we talk about life. At times I like to hung out with friends at the chiefs' camp, in the adminstration department, we share words of wisdom as we discuss matters that affect youths in our area, I find this relaxing and beneficial to me."

"In the next six months, I expect to have managed to have completed the water tank purchasing project. I am still working hard to see that I accumulated the savings in the group enough to purchase a large water tank. This is my dream project since it will reduce the time I have been wasting in walking all along from home to the river and back. I am really grateful that all these are possible through giveDirectly which is dedicated to funding our projects of choice."

"The biggest hardship that I am faced with is inadequacy of land. What is available for cultivation is too small to accommodate all that I would wish to plant. This same piece of land is used every season. Sometimes the yield is low because the land is over used. This has always resulted into food shortage in my family. "

"Receiving this money means I will be able to buy oxen that I can use for ploughing. I also hope to spend this money on treatment. I have been sick for a very long time but I have never had money to get better treatment. The best I have done is to buy pain killers and swallow which does not help. "

"As I was paying the remaining amount for the land, I was also running another house construction project in our household. I had to halt it a bit when I saw the need for completing one at a time and now that I have completed the payment of the farm, it is a good time now to resume. I am hopeful that this project will be complete before long and in my projection, December will be the month. Thanks to GiveDirectly for changing our lives."

"On my usual day I wake up at 6:00am, I prepare for breakfast, wash utensils and then I take a bath. I then take my child who is nine months old to a nearby day care as I leave for work in Eastleigh. I arrive at my workplace at 9:00am and embark on washing clothes at my employers house, clean house and wash utensils until 2:00pm when I return back to my house. Later on at 3:00pm I pick my child from the day care center, head to my house where I prepare lunch, wash my clothes and then clean my house and take a nap. I then wake up at 6:00pm to prepare supper for my family. After having supper, I pray, thanking God for the day and then I retire to sleep. In my free time I like to relax at home."
