Maryanne
received a $360 second payment.
"Before I received the transfers, I was staying at my friend's house. This is because financially I was not able to support myself in renting a house. I had a very small income from my salon job which could not even my own needs. I had to put up with the situation in as much as I was going through a lot at that time I was staying with the friend. I knew one day, I will find a way out but I did not know it will be through GD. I used my transfer to rent a house and currently I stay alone. I am able to pay my rent, buy enough food and meet other needs comfortably because of GD transfers. I feel there is a lot of peace in my life now."

Erick
received a $22 twenty-first payment.
"There are enough changes I have seen from what I have been doing using the transfers and I still expect more changes. For instance, I want to make sure I save enough money within the next six months so that by the time my wife is done with exclusive breastfeeding of the baby, I start up a small scale business for her so that she can also have her source of getting an income."

Benard
received a $360 second payment.
"My life is currently different from how it was in that, I have time to rest. Before then, I used to sell clothes in the streets during the day and do the motorcycle taxi business at night. I had only two hours to sleep in the name of making money. I thank GiveDirectly very much for the financial support which I used in starting a business for my wife. Today, she helps me run the other business because it is located in one area and I have time to do the motorcycle business now during the day hence having time to rest at night."

Selina
received a $533 initial payment.
"I have been operating a maize milling business and the chances of expanding were minimal because I never managed to fully meet my customer's needs, thus reducing my profits. It had been discouraging watching my customers go for distance to get maize flour that I could have provided with an exchange of money. I lost a lot and felt I had made a wrong mistake putting up my business. I had a wish to expand it by bringing in maize to sell but the low profits and overwhelming family needs made my dream unrealistic. When I received my first transfer, I resolved to inject KES 30000 to increase the stock in my business. I bought adequate maize stock that will serve a large number of customers thus I am sure that my earnings will improve and increase again. My business is back to life again through the money I received from GiveDirectly. To me, this is the biggest difference in my daily life. I believe the extra profits will help me improve my family living standards and meet emergencies in the family."

Martin
received a $360 second payment.
"I have spent my transfers on savings in my Mpesa account. I am still planning to use the money in starting a business. I would want to use this opportunity given to me by GD through the transfers to establish myself financially. I would not want to go back to the struggles I used to have before the transfers."

Jairus
received a $360 second payment.
"I spent my transfer on buying building materials such as nails, timber and iron sheets which I am using to put up my own house. I did not have a house at home and I have been sleeping in my mother's kitchen anytime I am at home. It has been very shameful for me since most of my agemates have their own houses. I also used part of my transfer to pay masons who are working on the new house. Since that was a new house, I did not have any household items in it hence I used part of the transfer to buy them such as seats, utensils and bedding. The rest of the transfer I used as fare to travel home for the building of the house and to buy food used to feed the masons and my family member."

Jane
received a $533 initial payment.
"I struggle each day to make sure that my family has a happy and healthy life thus making sure that we have access to basic needs is my priority. In our area, getting clean water is a problem given that we have to go far to fetch water in a river. Apart from my family being at risk of contracting water-borne diseases, this situation had put me in deep stress since it was time-consuming and straining to fetch enough water in a day for my family use. Currently, my life has greatly changed in that my family now has access to clean water for consumption and domestic use. I used my transfer to buy a water tank and I currently do not go to the river to fetch water like before. I am happy that I have saved my family from the risk of water-borne diseases and I can relax too. I feel this water tank has given me the biggest difference in my daily life ever and am thankful to GiveDirectly."
