"The biggest hardship I have faced in life is the prolonged droughts that usually hit our area. As an enthusiastic farmer who depends on natural rains only, I have been realizing poor yields from my 3-acre farm. Besides, I have been spending substantial amounts of time and energy while fetching water for my livestock and domestic uses since I do not have piped water and yet the nearest river is about 3kms away."

"Since I got married, I have been living in a one-roomed house with my two co-wives and our children, I always feel disgraced because there is no privacy at all. We have become a laughing stock to our neighbors and villagers. I had a desire of having my structure but due to financial problems, I have not been able to do so. When I receive the transfers I will use 30,000 Kenya shillings to build a two-roomed house for my family. This will regain my respect and privacy which I have lacked for long. I will also use 35,000 Kenya shillings to buy 2 cows for milking, the income which I will get will help in my financial emergencies. I will then use 20,000 shillings to pay school fees for my children."

"Receiving this money means reduced financial distress in my family. I usually buy 2 litres of milk for my family consumption at 60 shillings daily. Buying one dairy cow using $350 of my transfer will help reduce this burden. I will also use $300 to build a two-roomed iron-roofed house for my teenage sons whom I currently share my house, which is against our culture."

"Living as a single lady is the biggest challenge I have gone through. Life is full of hardships and tackling them all by yourself can be so hard. I have one child from my previous relationship and when he falls sick I am left running up and down seeking treatment all alone. Talk of boredom and loneliness that engulf my house every single evening. I have no one to talk to and share my frustrations. This ordeal makes me feel like I am disconnected from the rest of the world. This is not the kind of life I ever anticipated when I was growing up."
