"I live in a single-roomed house that cannot accommodate my entire family. The house serves as a kitchen, bedroom and at the same time living room. In our culture, it is wrong for grown children to sleep in the same house as parents. Every evening my daughters are forced to go to my neighbor's house to have sleep. Going out in the evening is often dangerous for them and at times I have to escort them to ensure that they get there safely. One day they were almost raped as they made their way and this has made me think of a way I can solve this problem but up to now I do not know how to go around this."

"The scarcity of freshwater for domestic and farming is the biggest hardship we have faced as a family. We are living at the top of a hill where there is no tap water or any water spring. As such, I have been handling the tiresome task of fetching water from a stream that is situated four kilometers from our home. Besides, we are straining to survive with the little amounts of water that I could manage to carry on my back."

"Besides subsistence farming, we burn charcoal for a living. This job earns us around 2500 shillings a month or less. The amount is so little that it cannot meet our needs fully. Food insecurity has become part and parcel of us because we do not have enough money to buy from shops when our yields run out. It is this same situation that made my children miss secondary education since I couldn't afford school fees. I can therefore say, lack of enough money is our biggest hardship."

"My current work that I can consider as a source of income is working on my neighbor's farm to get pay, usually 200 shillings per day when luck is on my side. This situation has rendered me inactive on my farm and consequently low harvest. Therefore, the amount I get on each day only provides hardly enough to my family. Hence the biggest hardships I have faced in my life is insufficient funds."
