"I spend part of the money I received from GiveDirectly to build a better house for my children. They used to live in a small grass thatched house which was very old. I found it Worth to build a better house for them to be comfortable. I also spend part of the money to buy a heifer. This will enable me to cut the cost of buying milk daily which is so expensive. The rest of the money I bought clothes and food for the family."

"My life is currently different than how it would have been had I not receive the transfer because I now live in an iron roofed house. Because of this, I am now able to collect clean rain water for drinking and domestic use. Also, living in an iron-roofed house is a sign of wealth and class in my neighborhood."

"The biggest hardship I have faced is financial stability. I work as a casual labourer in house construction and I am not guaranteed an income or a job on a daily basis. Sometimes I stay up to 5 months without being called for such jobs and I am forced to revert to farming in people's farms. My income is not stable and I haven't been able to provide the best education for my children since it's not enough for all their needs."

"The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is unemployment. After finishing my secondary school my parents didn't have money to take me to collage and opted for me to start hustling. I have been doing casual jobs since then which include working in people's farms within the village and get paid $2 as well as in house construction in the nearby villages. On a good month if I get a house construction job I get paid $50 that has to cater for food, savings and clothing for my family. Depending on that income alone is not reasonable for my family size."

"Abou three years ago,I fell ill.It is something that came gradually and at first I ignored it .With time,it advanced and got to a point where I was always very weak and could hardly perform any work around the homestead. My children took me to a hospital in town in 2020 where it was discovered that I had an irregular heartbeat (Arrhythmia),and for my particular case it was a slow heartbeat.I was booked in for an expensive surgery where a pacemaker was put.The total cost of the treatment was Sh 400,000.You can imagine where a peasant farmer,a widow, could get this amount from.My health insurance covered half the amount and we raised the rest by selling all the livestock that my late husband left me.Even though I am enroute to recovery,I still cannot work and this means I fully depend on my children to provide.I also do not have any other assets aside from this land which is quite unproductive. Not being able to work to meet my day to day needs has been the biggest hardship I have faced"

"My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have bought a dairy cow. I used to buy milk and it was so costly for me because I do not have a continuous source of income. I do small scale farming and the harvest is only for consumption. I sometimes sell the surplus at the market to earn an income to meet other basic household needs. I has always wished to own a dairy cow. When I received the second transfer I found it Worth to buy a one. My family now have enough milk and we sell the extra milk. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has enabled me to own a dairy cow."
