"After being diagnosed with stomach ulcers, the doctor advised that I should shun any labor-intensive activities. But how am I supposed to follow these instructions yet casual jobs are my source of income? This has affected my chances of recovery and I suffer frequent attacks. I do not even have money to seek a permanent medical solution and I have to deal with the endless pain. This is condition is the challenge that I have to deal with every day of my life."

"Financial struggles have taken away our right to a decent living. A budget of 3000 KES a month cannot cover all the needs of 5 people, no matter how much I try to squeeze it. As a result, my children often miss classes because I cannot raise fees as required. Getting enough food for the family is also a problem and in a week we can skip meals twice."

"The biggest hardship I've faced is food. I've been a farmer all my life and the yields from the farm has never been enough to feed my family. Most times I go hunting and it's through hunting we sometime get food but since the FDA pass a law against hunting my source of income has has reduced greatly and in turn brought so much hardship to my family and it makes me so sad everyday having to see my child and my wife go without food.
Because of hardship, I don't have income to send my child to school.
Even when he is ill, it's pain me because of lack of good medication to the health facility that is too far away from the village."

"Women in my village have come together, to form a merry-go-round amongst themselves. They contribute 100 KES per week. I have admired the initiative but failed to join because I do not have any form of generating income. I divorced my husband for accusations of infidelity. Since then, he has never sent a single coin for upkeep. With the transfers, I am also planning to join the welfare to feel like I am not left out."

"Imagine losing both parents in one month! It is disturbing my mind up-to-date. I know no peace. I was left all alone, as a result, I opted to come to my maternal home to take care of my parents' belonging. Life has never been the same ever since as the struggle to sustain my family is overwhelming. With no clear cause of my parent's death, I am in fear because I do not know what may happen next."

"I have been working as a mason since my youthful age. A job that is coupled with fatigue and burn-out. In my old age, I visioned to buy and sell livestock in an open-air market, a business that is mostly held with respect by the aged in my society. With these transfers, I plan to accumulate them for some time to raise capital that will enable me to realize the dream."

"I gave birth to my lastborn son in the year 2007. He was bubbling with joy, something every parent dream to see. However, things turned upside down after 5 years. My son was diagnosed with a stroke, followed by paralysis of the legs and arms, and despite the several hospital visits that I made, none bore fruits. It was more discouraging when spiritual leaders told me it could be as a result of evil powers. As per his health status, I had to take very close care and this discontinued my work of hawking coconuts. The worst part is, even after all this struggle, my son finally succumbed. I know no peace up-to-date."

"My life is different now because I have managed to buy a second-hand motorcycle with the transfer I received from GiveDirectly, unlike before where I used to work on a rented bike, I am glad that I can make a living out of it which is reliable compared to before, I then started a goat rearing project which I am hopeful that with time I will be able to get returns out of it for my family, the house that we were living in was a family house, it was small and old but we had no choice but to live in due to unreliable sources of income I am so happy and thankful that I was able to buy a motorbike in a short period. I am grateful that GiveDirectly has lifted my living standard to a better and a higher level in my society."
