"The thought of constructing a new house, paying school fees, and even providing for my family was almost impossible in the previous months as neither my husband nor I had a reliable job. I am always grateful that I am part of the GiveDirectly project that has brought great changes in my household right from the completion of a spacious new house to the stocking of enough foodstuff to keep us going for some months as we work on other projects that can earn us other income."

"On receiving the first transfer, I was happy to plan appropriately with my husband as we needed to accomplish a lot. With my family of three, we opted to renovate our old house that is spacious enough instead of constructing a new one. I spent KES10000 on buying building posts and timber useful in the renovation of the walls that were getting weak due to the raindrops splash. With the remaining amount, I spent KES35000 on livestock after buying a heifer at KES21000 and two goats at a combined cost of KES14000. I needed such an investment in livestock as we had none at all and this will help us in milk production in the future. I also paid KES4000 school fees areas for my son and the remaining amount was spent on foodstuff and other household goods."

"With the first KES30000 of the second transfer, I obtained the construction materials and put up two new houses - one for my two sons, and the other one as an extension to the main house. I needed an extra house where my sons will be studying after school and later on sleeping in as they had been seeking a place to sleep in the neighborhood due to the minimal space in the initial house I had. With the remaining amount, I spent KES10000 on clearing the school fees areas for my three children in school and the remaining KES12000 on clothing and enough foodstuff for my family of six."

"I spent part of my first transfer on buying several building materials such as iron sheets KES 16800, building poles KES 7000, timber KES 600, nails and threads KES 1000, and labor cost at a total of KES 5000. I had to purchase all these with an aim of constructing a new house because the previous one was just a temporary small hut. Also, I bought a wooden bed for my children because they have been sleeping on some old mats for all that time. I later paid cleared school fees arrears (KES 3000) for my three children so that they can study without any disturbances. In addition to that, I paid off a dept of KES 5000 to a friend who owns a kiosk in the village. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough food like maize flour, vegetables, and other household items like clothes for my children"

"The hardship that I have faced is the death of both my parents who died whilst I was little. This made me not to go to school as much as I wanted. Since then I have been raised by different relatives who did not want to take the responsibility of paying school fees. So o end up working in a farm with a very little pay check. Whilst I was working in the farm, things were hard, but not very because I could manage to buy food and clothes. But really poverty came after the death of the farm owner."
