"I was so grateful the moment I received the money because it gave me the ability to fulfill the plans I have been having and address the pressing challenges that had been giving me sleepless nights. My little food cafe was struggling and was not able to sustain itself which used to make me so sad but when I received the money, it was like dawn to me. I was so happy and grateful."

"My income comes from farming, I plant maize and cassava for commercial and subsistence use. This year we were not blessed with rains and I have not made any harvest. This has affected my income negatively, I have no product to sell and as a result not able to provide for my family. There are days we go to be hungry because I did not manage to get money to buy even a bundle of flour."

"My health has been a challenge for the longest time, I have ulcers and currently, I am unable to work or move around as I used to. The only time I get to leave the village is when I have to visit the hospital, this has made life less interesting and more of a routine."

"My business is not doing so well, I sell Charcoal for a living but at the moment my clients are not buying my product as they used to. Everyone is complaining about tough times and the economy not doing so well. This has reduced the number of trips I go to the market to sell the charcoal, previously I would make three trips but now I only make one trip. Bills are piling up and my family is growing. We were recently blessed with our fifth child and at that time I did not even have money to pay the hospital bills."

"I plan to invest in livestock farming, I am a subsistence farmer and I have always thought farming would be more productive when I have a cow or two to help in plowing. My goal is to buy about four cows by the end of this project. I have savings in a group called Silk, we usually take loans and pay at an interest. I will take a loan of about 15,000 KES shillings and buy a calf, the money I get from GiveDirectly will be used to offset the loan."

"This money will be meaningful as i will buy ironsheets so that in the near future we should no longer worry about rains because whenever it's a rainy season our house its always in water due to leaks from the roof (grass thatched), on our own we couldn't manage because we don't have a fixed source of income as a husband i go fishing and i sell some of the fish which is less 2000 and i use that to buy maize for us to be eating but we couldn't afford to build a beautiful house"

"I would wish to know how it feels to sleep in a comfortable bed. All my life I have been sleeping on a bed made with ropes. It is very uncomfortable sleeping in such kind of a bed. My first budget is therefore to buy a comfortable bed which will cost me around 6000KES. For me to achieve this and have all the money at hand I plan to save for two conservative months. Receiving this money means sleeping comfortably."

"Since I got married 6 years ago I have been fully dependent on my husband. He is overwhelmed with responsibilities because he also takes care of his parents and younger siblings. Seeing him struggle to make ends meet without complaining makes me sad and this is the reason I want to make use of this golden opportunity to start a business so I can help him. I plan to open a food kiosk at the market center. My budget is around 3000KES, the first transfer will be enough to kick it off and keep on boosting it as time goes by with other transfers."

"My desire for a long time has always been to have a bigger plus a bed house where my children and grandchildren can sleep whenever they come visiting. I have never slept on a bed before and the first thing I will do with these transfers is to buy a bed. The bed will cost me around 4000KES and since I will be getting 3000KES per month I plan to save for two months then buy the bed. The plan I have after buying the bed is to continue saving as I buy building materials in bits then later build a bigger house for my family."
