"We have been cooking in a grass thatched kitchen built in 1994 which is in a deplorable state because it is very old. It is filled with soot strands, hanging precariously and whenever I receive visitors, I feel ashamed when they visit my kitchen yet I am a respectable teacher in a nearby school. I intend to spend an estimate of KES 100,000 of my transfer to build a better one to take away the shame that I normally feel. I was overjoyed when I learned that GiveDirectly was coming to our village because I knew that soon my fears will be of the past. Therefore, receiving this money means an improved housing for my family."

"The challenges I am currently facing is access to finance and food security. The main source of income we have in this place is sales of charcoal and wild palm nuts. The money earned from those are not sufficient to meet our family needs, the little earnings we get from the sales help us get food and other things but can get to our expectations. My kids are not in school this year because financial constraints and nowadays we cook late evenings to eat than before when we ate two times a day, this has caused my children health condition unimproved. I will really appreciate assistance that will improve the livelihood of family."

""When I receive this money, I will establish "dry goods" market with it. I have been a (subsistence) farmer all of my life. Farming has not made any significant improvement in my life. Every year we labor with very little profit. I have been planning to try something different. I have not had the needed money to start, but it has always been my prayer to establish a 'dry goods' business. Business will make profit.. will help my kids to enroll.""

"We spent most of the money on buying a cow. We had another cow but it was not ours and it was dry. We decided that with the transfer, we were going to buy one because it was going to be of great benefit to us. The cow that we bought is about to calve and when it does, we are going to get milk that we can consume and sell. We were thus going to get the money that we can use on other developments. Although we have always wanted to buy another cow, we were not in a position to due to financial constraints. The little money that we get, most of it usually goes to the purchase of food."

"I spent the better part of the transfer in building another house. I had always wanted to build one but due to lack of money, I was not in a position to. My husband and I depend on casual jobs of farming to earn a living. The money that we get from these casual jobs most of it usually goes to the purchase of food. We have also joined small self-help groups and the money that we get from the merry-go-round contributions is what we use in paying school fees for our children. There is thus none that is left for doing developments such as constructing a house."
