"Little income compared to my needs is the biggest challenge that I am currently facing. I am a business lady selling second-hand clothes. I earn an average of KES 500 daily and this amount cannot fully support all my needs. This is because I am the only breadwinner of our family of 8. I am currently paying school fees for my brother who is in secondary school and have been struggling a lot."

"Receiving this money implies an investment opportunity for me. I am a 29 years old single man. I own a land plot nearby. The plot is still bare, I have not invested in it due to lack of money. I intend to use a total of 80,000 KES to build a house on that plot. The house will have 4 single rooms. There is a day secondary school close by ( Palakumi Secondary School. I am optimistic that my house will be occupied after its completion. My targeted occupants will be the students. I will be saving the rent I will be collecting for future use. I believe I will later have a family and families come with responsibilities."

"I am married in polygamous households, we both depend on the same husband. Being without a stable source of income is the challenge I am currently facing, this has made my 5 children stay at home because of fees arrears. I feel embarrassed seeing my children at home while neighbors' children are at school. I sell firewood to get my daily bread and cater to the basic needs of my 5 children. Mostly the firewood stays more than 2 months before it is purchased, this makes it hard to provide for my family."

"I spent KES 30000 from the money I received from GiveDirectly to buy some building materials that I will use in building a better and spacious house for my family. We live in a small grass-thatched house that does not host all my family members comfortably. I would have started the construction process since I am a mason but I decided to work on building other people's houses first and be able to earn more during this festive season in my neighborhood. In addition, I spent KES 18000 on clothes and foodstuffs for my family and I still have KES 6000 that I am planning to use in case I ran short of materials during the construction process."

"The biggest difference since the payments started is that firstly I am now able to provide enough food for my family as I managed to purchase a few food stuff meaning that we are able to eat all 3 meals in a day.. The other difference is that my husband is getting new contracts to build houses for many people in the village as he have sufficient tools required for his work..The flow of income is even great and better, I feel everyone is happy in my family. Also, our life is better now with the bicycle that we have as it is helping in easing our transportation problems especially when going to the market or hospital as this were the 2 places that have been worrying me a lot."

"Receiving this money means opening a kiosk in my village. In this area, shops are 5km away something that have created a business opportunity. With a capital of 50000KES, I will be able to open the kiosk which am very sure will have created an employment for me and a source of income for my household. My wife has very perfect skills in making donuts, so in that kiosk we will use that as a way of attracting customers and increase the income."

"Receiving this money means clearing school fees for my 4 children who are in secondary school ( form 4). I have been trying hard to educate my children despite the financial challenges I have. I acknowledge education is the key to a successful life. Currently, they have a total balance of up to 60,000 KES. I am hoping to spend 60,000 KES to clear the arrears and this will give them room to acquire their certificate once they are done with exams. I expect that they will pass and proceed to university and support us once they are employed. In addition, I will spend the remaining part of the transfer to purchase a 3000-liter water tank, whereby I will use to store water and sell it to residents when we have water scarcity."
