"We have been struggling to make ends meet through casual labor (weeding, planting, fencing) which is hectic and tiresome yet it is hard to get. I have been thinking about how to improve my life using other means which is not exhaustive but in vain. I was super excited when I heard that GiveDirectly was coming and I couldn't hide my joy. I knew that we are on the verge of making a difference in the family through having a stable source of income without much struggle. At an estimated cost of KES 30,000, I intend to purchase a dairy cow and my projection is to milk at least 8 liters a day. Out of this, we will consume 3 liters and sell the remaining at KES 40 a liter and better the life of my family."

"As a household we depend on farming of maize to sustain our family needs. This year we are facing drought and as farmers this has impacted negatively on our harvest. Before the drought I would get a produce of upto 17 sacks of maize from our one acre piece of land after harvesting. I was selling the maize and used the money to pay school fees, buy food and clothes for my 3 children and wife. But this year I have only been able to get 7 sacks of maize and I don't have any other sources of income. The maize was also our food but now I'm prioritizing on selling it to get money for school fees, because of that my household doesn't have enough food."

"Receiving this money means self independence to me. The house I live in is within my parents' compound and I have been aspiring to buy my own land and build a house in it. I will therefore use KES 40000 to buy a 0.2 acre piece of land and spend KES 30000 to build a two roomed iron roofed house, and KES 10000 to build a kitchen. I will then spend the remaining KES 25000 to buy a lactating cow, hence an assurance of some daily income from selling milk."

"Receiving this money means building a permanent house for me. I am currently living in a one bedroom house with a grass roof. It leaks during rains season. I will build a two bedroom house at a cost of KES 80000. I will also use KES 20000 to buy five goats as investment. I will use the remaining KES 10000 to pay school fees for my children."

"Receiving this money has brought so much happiness to me. My plan with this money is to build myself a nice house, buy enough food, matress and Household utensils like buckets, plates and pots.I have been unable to buy these things on my own because the money I earn from casual labour (ganyu) is very little to even buy a simple pot."
