How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The funds received from GiveDirectly have enabled me to pay up school fees for my little brother thus he gets to have uninterrupted time at school. More to that, I have been able to also clear payment for the plot of land I had purchased.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
This has been a major boost as most communities have been positively impacted and livelihoods improved all over.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With the 55000Ksh received, I split the amount into a number of projects that needed attention. I paid 15000Ksh to my brother's school as his education fees hence he cannot miss any classes. I was also able to clear some land arrears that I had of 15000Ksh thus I am able to live comfortably on my own piece of land. Being self employed, I set aside 20000Ksh to add to my cloth selling business which in turn boosts my monthly income. The remaining 5000Ksh was spent to add to food supplements in the house ensuring we never sleep hungry.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was very early in the morning when I woke up to the SMS confirming that I had received the money from GiveDirectly. I was so happy the moment I found out that I had gotten the money because I had now gotten the ability I needed fo the things I desired and address the challenges I was facing.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that my clothes selling business was revived and now stable. I also have a piece of land where I will very soon relocate my business to it, and never worry about having to pay regular rent irrespective of whether my business is flourishing or struggling. I am happier now than I was before when I started receiving money from GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the transfer which was KES 20000 on settling my younger brother's school fees arrears because they had accumulated over a long period which wasn't very good for his education. This is because I believe in education, and it is his future. It is as well my responsibility as his elder sister to cater for his education, even though I don't have any expectations on him to give anything back to me after he successfully completes his education and gets employed. I also spent KES 20000 on making a partial payment for a piece of land that I bought because I needed to transfer my business to a place that I wouldn't have to worry about paying rent or having rent arrears. This was also because the rent has to be paid even if the business isn't making much to even sustain itself, which would inturn bring issues between the landlord and I. Therefore, this makes me so happy and my mind at peace. All thanks to GiveDirectly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a boost to my income. I plan to invest in business. I am a business lady selling second-hand clothes. My plan once I receive this transfer is to spend KES 55000 to boost my stock and this I am assured of getting more profit of KES 1000 daily. The remaining amount will be invested in my sibling's educational needs. This is because I am the sole breadwinner in our family. My parents are very old and therefore they depend on me a lot.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have been working as a house help for over 3 years in town; a very tiresome job yet its earning is as little as KES 5000 per month. In the month of July, I decided to start my own business from the savings I had. I started my own business of selling second hand clothes. This made me very happy because I work under no pressure and I am earning more than I used to earn before.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Little income compared to my needs is the biggest challenge that I am currently facing. I am a business lady selling second-hand clothes. I earn an average of KES 500 daily and this amount cannot fully support all my needs. This is because I am the only breadwinner of our family of 8. I am currently paying school fees for my brother who is in secondary school and have been struggling a lot.
