"Even though I am old, I have always strived to make ends meet through farming. I often sell farm produce such as bananas, eggs and chicken to earn income. It's through this, that I have been able to build a 2 bedroom timber walled house for my family of 2. Regrettably, I have not been able to complete it for I have depleted the finances I had accumulated. It is a sigh of relief now with Givedirectly's transfers, for I purpose to use KES 50000 towards this course. I will be delighted that my family will have a comfortable shelter to live in."

"My challenges are lack of money to achieve my plans and to buy livestock so I can also gain respect from my community members. It hurst when people look down on me because I lack wealth that I can show. This is very frustrating and stressful."

"Financial impediments are a challenge I am currently facing. I am a businessman who depends on buying and selling cattle to earn KES 600 every week to support my family of 7. This is however insufficient and I am restricted on investments. I am always embarrassed borrowing money from friends, to support my family which leaves me mostly in debt."

"In my opinion, as a beneficiary, GiveDirectly did a very great job in my entire village. The money was sent directly to our phones and allowed us to choose according to our needs. This empowered us to send our children to school and own livestock. On the other hand, I do not see any part GiveDirectly needs to change."

"I have been aspiring to start poultry farming and earn some cash from it. I am engaged in house construction work within and outside the village which is hard to get. When I get the job, I earn an estimated wage of KES 500 a day which is hardly enough to cater to a family 6. Because my wife is just a housewife, I saw the need to start poultry farming which will make her busy and at the same time earn cash from it. I, therefore, intend to spend approximately KES 50,000 to accomplish the whole project and buy chicks. This will be a stepping stone into realizing my dream and I am glad for that."

"The biggest challenge is the lack of basic needs like food for my family. I do locum in the nearby health facility where I work as a substitute nurse. My pay is KES 750 per day whenever I am called upon however it is not guaranteed to get the job daily. My pay is not sufficient to meet all my household needs like food and sometimes we are forced to have a meal twice a day. It saddens me to see my young children miss a meal in a day since they need good nutrition for them to grow."

"I spent part of my second transfer on buying building materials such as building poles at KES 6000, iron sheets at KES 24200, timber, nails, the metal door at KES 7000, and the labor charge of KES 10000. I had intended to construct a new house because the previous one was almost collapsing due to the weak walls. During the rainy seasons, I used to seek shelter from my friends which was very frustrating. To add to that, l bought a water tank of 200litres at KES 1800. I feel there is a relief because I can harvest and store water for my domestic purposes Also with the remaining amount of money, I bought some household items like utensils, chairs, and sufficient foodstuffs for my family."

"In my opinion, GiveDirectly did so well in my village by ensuring that every needy house was visited. Also, we all received the money on time as we had been promised earlier during the registration period. This has empowered us to construct beautiful houses and own livestock which has been our long-time dream. Therefore I do not see any part GiveDirectly needs to change."

"In my opinion, GiveDirectly does so well in alleviating poverty through direct cash transfer. This has greatly improved our lifestyle by relieving us from the hard casual labour of making and selling charcoal. Currently, all in our village are happy because as a result of the transfers, they have been able to buy food for their family members. Even families that previously had difficulty in raising fees have found it easier to pay off their children school fees. Indeed, GiveDirectly is such an orderly NGOs that is mindful of the less fortunate."

"I spent the transfer on 20 iron sheets to build a house. I also bought 2 goats which I want to sell in future at a profit. The money also helped me to buy food for me and my child Mackdonald that we do have enough food in the house."
