How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I did not have any new goal because the main one was to construct a new spacious house. I had to prioritize this because initially, I used to sleep in an unpleasant environment. Every evening my children had to move from one compound to the other in search of shelter. I am happy that I was able to accomplish this.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, as a beneficiary, GiveDirectly did a very great job in my entire village. The money was sent directly to our phones and allowed us to choose according to our needs. This empowered us to send our children to school and own livestock. On the other hand, I do not see any part GiveDirectly needs to change.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying three goats at KES 10500. I had been longing to own them for quite some time but I could afford them because they were very expensive. I however opted to buy them because they take little time to mature. I later cleared school fees of KES 8000 for my five children who are in primary schools. I also bought two modern beds at KES10000 and three mattresses at a total cost of KES 8500. These were to replace the old mats that I have been using as beddings. To add to that I bought new clothes for my children and decent shoes. I also remember having to settle a debt of 2000 to a friend. To add to that I bought iron sheets worthy of KES 6500 and labor charges of KES 3000. These were for the construction of a new house for my children who have been sleeping at their friend's houses for years.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
At around 9am while busy washing my clothes, is when I received a message in my phone. After contacting my helper is when I was told the message was a money message from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed after getting the transfer information because sincerely I had nothing to eat for that day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Owning a house and rearing goats is a huge difference in my life. I hadn’t even dreamt of having a separate house from the kitchen I used to sleep but thanks to GiveDirectly for providing me an opportunity to have a house. I am also a happy herder; rearing livestock was like a miracle to me since I didn’t have the means of getting some. As of now I am herding and am happy for that. Again this is GiveDirectly doing.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, I took KES 22000.00 and build a house since I was sleeping in a kitchen. Where I used to cook is where my bed was plus my entire luggage, it was a pathetic situation. I also used KES 16000.00 to repair my motorbike, paying debts and buying some food. The motorbike aids me in fetching some water as well as using it for business (bodaboda). I also bought 4 goats for KES 14000.00. I bought the goats instead of cows because they can cope up with the dry season we are experiencing in our area.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a proper house to my family. I am planning to spend my KES 60000 to construct a two-bedroom house and a sitting room that will be spacious enough for my family of 9, this will restore the respect that I have lost for long. Currently, I am living in a small and leaking house together with my family of 9. This house is a shame to me because there is no privacy. I will further spend KES 30000 to buy 10 goats that will act as a long-term investment project for my household. The remaining amount will cater for household expenses like food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Morning is the happiest part of my day. Waking up healthy with the rest of my family is something that gives me joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship that I ever faced in my life is financial instability. This is because I am a charcoal burner and my spouse is a charcoal vendor. Considering our very little income of KES 10000 per month which we use to buy food for the family. We lack more money to cater to all our basic needs like constructing a decent house for my family.
