How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I work as a volunteer nurse in one of the community facilities in our area. Before GiveDirectly came into our lives, I used to pray fare of KES 400 a day to and fro my workplace and that was too expensive for me. I decided to buy a motorcycle to ease my movement and as at the moment, I spent KES 3000 a month on fuel and that has saved me a lot. With the stipend which I got, I will be saving so that I can spend on starting up a business that would generate some income and that's my goal at the moment.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well by sending money to those individuals who were eligible for the project. The money enabled each beneficiary to acquire that which they needed.
What GiveDirectly didn't do well is that they left out some people who were deserving as well. They said that they didn't meet the criteria yet they were residents like us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend KES 40000 on buying a second-hand motorcycle which I am using to and fro my workplace. The remaining amount, I spent on buying a few clothes for my family members and also bought some food for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. I learnt that I had received the money late in the evening since my phone was left charging for the better part of the day. I felt so happy that a promise that we had been told was finally fulfilled. I informed my wife who was equally very happy and told me to go looking for the motorcycle that we had agreed we would buy.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the fact that I am so much flexible with my work. I no longer go into debts like I used to do before acquiring the motorcycle. I am so much indebted to GiveDirectly for giving me the peace of mind that I so much yearned for before receiving the money. The extra income that I get from my motorcycle business has seen my family go without lacking food ever since
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 43500 to buy a second hand motorcycle and used the remaining amount to buy food and clothes for my 2 children. The idea of buying a motorcycle was to allow me to commute comfortably from home and my place of work and be able to take care of my family appropriately. Before we could buy the motorcycle I use to hire a Motorcycle from a friend and this was very costly and straining the little resources that I got from my work. I am happy that right now I find it easy travelling to my place of work and I can even get extra income by engaging in motorcycle business during my free time and has helped in uplifting the living standards of my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I graduated from Kenya Medical Training college last year where I did nursing. I have been working as a substitute nurse in a nearby health facility. My job is not consistent since I am called upon when there is a shortage in the facility. My pay, however, is KES 750 per day and it is not guaranteed that I will get the job for an entire week sometimes it is once a week. My pay is insufficient to meet all my household needs like purchasing food. So when I receive this transfer I will spend my entire transfer of KES 110000 to open my clinic in the nearby town. This clinic will be my source of income and I am glad that I will be self-employed.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My life was filled with joy and happiness when I graduated as a registered nurse. Even though I do not have a job yet I am glad that when I receive this transfer I will be able to open up my own clinic.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge is the lack of basic needs like food for my family. I do locum in the nearby health facility where I work as a substitute nurse. My pay is KES 750 per day whenever I am called upon however it is not guaranteed to get the job daily. My pay is not sufficient to meet all my household needs like food and sometimes we are forced to have a meal twice a day. It saddens me to see my young children miss a meal in a day since they need good nutrition for them to grow.
