"Upon receiving the transfers I went ahead and paid for my school fee debt which was KES 10,000. I also bought timber worth KES 5,000 so that it could help us with the building of the new house.I also went ahead and bought a motorcycle for my brother and a deposit of KES 15,000 because he was going to use it as a means of transport in order to make money. Lastly I used KES 10,800 to buy a bed and a mattress because prior to that I was sleeping on a mat on the ground."

Micah
received a $460 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a dairy cow. I used to buy milk daily and this was so costly. This was the biggest challenge that I was facing at that particular time. I am a motorcycle taxi operator, someone has employed me to work for him. This was so demanding because I had to meet my needs as well. There were no savings I could make due to the daily recurring of basic needs. I used to spend KES 50 per day on milk and sometimes whenever I had no money my children would miss getting milk and this was so stressful. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I decided to invest in dairy cows. Currently, I have enough milk for my family and this had given me peace of mind since I no longer struggle like before. I wish to grow this to another level since this in the long run will be my main source of income. I will be selling milk since there is demand and I will save the money to buy another dairy cow."

received an initial payment.
"It is barely a year after I got married and since then we had been living with my wife in a single house that I previously had. It was our plan to put up another new house, but after great deliberation; we decided to spend the full amount added to the savings we had and bought a motorcycle worth KES 65000. we had been spending a lot while commuting to and from our workplaces that are a distant way from home. With the motorcycle, we have had a simple time since we are currently spending on fuel, which is much cheaper compared to the previous months. We are planning to construct a new house with the second transfer and in case of extra cash, we also have a plan to buy a cow."

received an initial payment.
"While cooking supper at around 7.30 pm, I heard a message popping into my phone. Instead of taking time to place things in order before taking the phone, I do not know what conspired and I found myself leaving the cooking for the phone. I almost messed up with the cooking because after checking, I realized that I had received KES 55000.00 from GiveDirectly. My heart was filled with joy to extent of forgetting that I was cooking. Fortunately, I found my senses early before spoiling the food."

"My plan was to build a house because we can't continue living in another person's house forever. Because of lack of finance, we could not achieve that plan. When i receive this transfer i will build a house as this had been my plan. I will use portion of the money, to buy a motor bike since my spouse is a motorcyclist. The proceeds from the motor bike will help us to establish a little business. I am very happy that Give Directly have come to help me achieve my plans."

Katana
received a $461 initial payment.
"Being the elder son in my family of four, I serve as the father to my siblings. This is because our dad passed on and I was left to look after my young brothers. When I received the money, The first thing I did was to pay a debt of KES 27000.00 which I borrowed to take my young brother to secondary school. He had performed well in his national examination and I had to do all means so that he joins the secondary school. Thereafter, I took KES 20000.00 to finalize payments of the piece of land we are living on. I had a balance of the KES 20000.00 and the owner was not giving me peace of mind to an extent of opting to sell a portion of the land worthy of the money which was remaining. For the remaining amount, I opted to buy some poles and rafters for constructing a new house. Therefore, I kept the poles and the rafters waiting for the second transfer so that I build a new house and leave the one I have to my young brothers."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is the improved running of my business. I have been saving a lot since I spent less on transport from home to the workplace and also on making timely deliveries to my customers. The motorcycle I bought has cushioned me a lot from hiring a rider that was so expensive. I have saved the daily KES 100 transport to and from the workplace since I have been using the same means from home and back later in the evening."

"Since I seized engaging in mining activities, I have been riding a motorcycle commercially to sponsor my children back in Monrovia. with this, I currently don't have my own motorcycle, but I serve as a helper to colleagues who owns a bike.
Against this backdrop; if I am qualified to receive the cash transfer, I will use 50% of the cash to build a house first and later use the balance 50% to buy a used bike of my own which will stop me from being a helper."
