How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Personally I was hoping that by the time I received the transfers that I would help pay school fees for myself since my parents were struggling financially. I also wanted to help you finish building a better house for my parents because the one we lived in was very old and it was almost collapsing on us.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I applaud Givedirectly for the donations and the help that they have shown us so far because I personally was able to pay my school tuition especially considering that my parents were struggling financially
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the transfers I went ahead and paid for my school fee debt which was KES 10,000. I also bought timber worth KES 5,000 so that it could help us with the building of the new house.I also went ahead and bought a motorcycle for my brother and a deposit of KES 15,000 because he was going to use it as a means of transport in order to make money. Lastly I used KES 10,800 to buy a bed and a mattress because prior to that I was sleeping on a mat on the ground.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was exactly 7 am, I had just woken up that morning. As usual, after waking up I always check my phone to see if there is any communication. I was so surprised after realizing that I had Mpesa messages on my phone. After verifying it, it was the transfer from GiveDirectly. I informed my father and brother about it, it was a very happy moment in our life. We all rejoiced and celebrated for receiving our transfer that was to transform our living standards for the better.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest in our life is that we are currently able to meet our needs, especially food without much struggle. Previously, we were going to bed without food something was even affecting our concentration in class. Furthermore, we will be able to have a constant flow of income from the motorbike taxi business that we intend to start.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 15,000 on my transfer to purchase a brand new motorbike for my family on hire purchase and I planned to pay the remaining in installments. We intend to start a taxi business as a reliable source of income for my family. This was to supplement our father's income from his water vending business a job that is not sustainable to upkeep our family of three. The income from this job will be used to pay our school fees as well as bought food for the family. In addition, I bought a bed and mattress for KES 11,000 this was for my father who was sleeping on the floor. Lastly, I saved some money for the payment of our school fees for my brother and me when they are reopened. With the remaining amount, we bought enough foodstuffs like rice, sugar for our family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a debt of school fees worthy KES 43,000 I and my 2 brothers are in secondary school and my parents are living elsewhere in another town doing casual labour in a soap industry. Their wages cannot meet the needs of our house and this made us being sent home from school for school fees. We have finished one week here at home without attending classes because the school fees debt has grown to be huge. Receiving this money means we wil clear the school fees balance and then buy food for our house because getting 3 meals in a day is also a problem.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We celebrated Christmas together and my father managed to slaughtered a goat. . What brought joy and happiness is seeing both my parents are at home celebrating Christmas with us.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity and school fees are the biggest challenges in my house. My parents are living away from us and therefore we fell lonely.
