How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
When I first received the transfer, I used it to purchase a used motorcycle. The motorcycle has been extremely useful to me. Initially, I used to travel a long distance to work, paying $1.5 to get there. This was very expensive, and yet I received very little pay at the end of the month. Buying this motorcycle has helped me cut my traveling costs in half, and at times, I travel for free. This is because I frequently transport passengers who travel the same route. The motorcycle has also allowed me to engage in side hustles when I am not on a committee at work. I have set a new goal of launching a new business. The plan is to purchase goats at a lower cost, fatten them for a period, and then sell them at a higher cost. I already have twelve goats, and my goal is to have 30 goats before I start the business. The demand is already high, and if I start the business today, I would be able to sell at least one goat per day. This business presents no difficulties for me because I have enough land for the goats to graze on. I should complete this by the beginning of next year.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly, in my opinion, does an excellent job of providing everyone with an equal opportunity to choose how to spend their money. They are also very eager to enroll households that have agreed on how they will spend the money, implying that the money has brought unity in families. In their enrollment process, the officers were very fair, transparent, and impartial.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for the support we received as a family. We enrolled at a time when I had just started a family with my wife and we had a lot on our to-do list. As a private teacher in a school where the pay could only cover my family's basic expenses. When we received the second transfer, we used $150 to build a new kitchen. We only had one house that served as both a kitchen and the main house. This was uncomfortable for us, but we did not have enough money to build one yet. We now have a kitchen in the main house, which is great. I spent another $40 on a he-goat. I purchased some she-goats with the first transfer, and with the intention to increase the flock, I purchase a he-goat to aid the reproduction process. I used the remaining funds to pay off a debt owed to a friend who had previously assisted me. My friend was pressed for cash at the time, and it was the only way I could help him. I spent $150 on a kitchen, $40 on a goat, and used the remaining funds to clear the debt and purchase household goods. After spending a lot on our wedding, I am grateful for the progress after the receipt of the transfer from GiveDirectly which has enhanced the completion of many projects. We are glad that we are now expecting our firstborn child.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was very happy to confirm that the promise GiveDirectly gave us was finally honored. It was around 6:00 pm while at home with my family when I received a message with the good news of the receipt of the first transfer. I informed my wife, who was very excited, and thereafter; we had to align all the pans that we had before collecting the entire amount from the nearby shopping center.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the great efficiency in movement from home to the workplace since we are both working a distance away from home. We have been able to get to the workplace on time and later back home earlier to do other household chores.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
It is barely a year after I got married and since then we had been living with my wife in a single house that I previously had. It was our plan to put up another new house, but after great deliberation; we decided to spend the full amount added to the savings we had and bought a motorcycle worth KES 65000. we had been spending a lot while commuting to and from our workplaces that are a distant way from home. With the motorcycle, we have had a simple time since we are currently spending on fuel, which is much cheaper compared to the previous months. We are planning to construct a new house with the second transfer and in case of extra cash, we also have a plan to buy a cow.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will help me so much. I recently officiated my marriage and as a young youth I am not financially stable. I have been living in a one main house. With a now grown family I think building a kitchen will be meaningful to accommodate my wife and her friends when doing daily kitchen routine chores. I will also prioritize buying a dairy cow for subsistence. I am much happy because GiveDirectly's help has come at the right time in my life barely a month after my marriage ceremony.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I base my joy and happiness to last month of April 2022 where I made my marriage official in a well organized religious ceremony. The function was successful and we really enjoyed taking lifetime vows. I am really happy because my family is now enlarged with more binding unions between my family and my in-laws.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Currently I am teaching under board of management in a sub-county school. The pay is very low to the amount KES 15000 per month. The amount is not even enough to sustain my daily expenses. The situation is much hard because I pay school fees for my two siblings. I am grateful and happy because with GiveDirectly's upper hand I will be able to clear some school fees arrears.
