"At the moment, I am struggling to feed my children and also to provide for their school needs. This is because we rely on farming and we all know we can't bank on it. It's an unpredictable source of income. This year we didn't harvest enough because we had limited manpower because my husband had been in a motorcycle accident and was physically constraint. My children had to go to school and I was supposed to both look after my husband and also work in the field. It was not possible to do it all. So we sort of neglected the field and therefore harvested less. Now we are on a hand to mouth basis since our harvest run out months ago."

Ahamin
received a $457 second payment.
"I spent part of my second transfer on buying a motorbike at KES 35000. I am glad that finally, I have a reliable source of income unlike before whereby I used to depend on casual jobs to meet my daily needs. Also, I bought iron sheets at KES 17500 for the renovation of my house which had an old leaky roof. It was so stressful because I had to shift to my friend's house which was very far from the village. As a result, I ended up losing and damaging my precious properties. I am now feeling thankful and happy because I will not have to worry about the weather changes or insecurities. Apart from that, I cleared school fees of KES 2000 for my three kids who are all in primary schools. I bought food for my family which is composed of five members."

Mercy
received a $441 second payment.
"I spend all the second transfers on purchasing land. We have a group in the village where we save some amount of money. When it was my turn to get the money I top up with the transfer from GiveDirectly and I was able to buy land worth KES 180,000. I am so happy because this has been my dream all along to own a bigger land. We lived on a small piece of land and I was not in a position to do any farming. This was a challenge since we would buy maize throughout the season. I depend on casual jobs and small businesses selling fruits. The amount of money that I get through this is so small and it is only for food and the basic needs of the family. I would save some amount in the group that we started. Currently, I do farming and this had given me hope in that I know I will get enough food to feed my family and cut the daily cost of buying. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards."

"In my opinion about what is not done well by GiveDirectly, I believe that there is nothing. GiveDirectly have done so much well by reaching out us and placing us on it's unconditional cash transfer program to improve our lives economically. Through this means I believe that the organisation was fair during the enrolment process and determining the right people that were qualify for the program."

Charles
received a $441 second payment.
"I spent KES 26000 of my second transfer on paying part of the cost of land that I am currently buying in the village. With my family of three, we have been living on my parents' land, and I could not construct a permanent structure since I will still need to move it. I am glad that after making the first deposit; I was allowed to start the construction of a kitchen structure worth KES 10000. I have a flexible payment scheme where I will be paying in bits to the end before fully moving into the new house. In addition, I have spent the remaining amount on foodstuff for my family, and also new pairs of clothes after clearing our old wardrobe."
