How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a new goal of starting a butchery bsiness. I worked as a butcher for someone else before I received GiveDirectly transfer and I therefore know how to handle this business better. Right now, I am fully engaged in my new business of sawmilling and I intend to save up enough money and be able to start the butchery business. If all goes well with the business that I am currently running, I will use the money to buy some of the things that I will require to start the business. I am very hopeful that I will be able to start this business soon.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly did very well by giving us support on form of cash. This was the real game changer for me. Everyone had an equal opportunity to spend the money in ways they thought would benefit them the more. Seeing the investments that I have personally made makes me so proud. Everyone else who received the money and utilized it in different ways that are helpful is also happy. I honestly did not find anything with GiveDirectly and its officers that I thought would have been done better or could be improved.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used the entire amount to buy a second hand motorcycle. When I received my first transfer, I bought a saw milling machine with it. This is a business idea that had always been in my mind but I had never acquired the neccesary capital to start the business. I worked as a butcher before receiving the transfer but I worked as an employee in the said butchery. Having bought the saw milling machine, I was faced with yet another challenge of transporting it to places where work was available. I often spent a lot in transport which could end up to losses or making very little income from my new business. It is for this reason that I decided to buy a second hand motorcycle that would help me a lot in travelling around the village and other areas to do this business. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly fir making my dream a reality and I am equally very hopeful and optimistic that my business shall thrive going forward.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. The money came at around 9:00 pm when I was just about to retire to bed. There would not have been a better way to end my day than to get such a message just before retiring to bed. I later planned on how to use the money and we made plans with my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving payments is the increase in income for me. I now make up to KES 1000 on a good day with the new hustle of saw milling. This is an amount that can sustain my family as well as enable me to make savings to be used in future.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent all of my recent transfer to buy a power saw. All along I have been a butcher but I always thought of engaging in saw milling business. I had saved some coins from my saw milling business and when I received money from GiveDirectly, it was much easier for me to buy the power saw and I am now happy that I have been able to change my hustle to that which will give me more income. The machine cost me KES 57000 and I am already so much into the business of saw milling.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means venturing into business. I do casual jobs where I am employed as a seller in a butchery. I have been employed for 4 years and I have gained enough experience to run my butchery however I have not gotten enough capital to start the business. So when I receive this transfer I will spend KES 40,000 as my capital to start the business. This business will be income-generating and I am happy that I will be self-employed.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have two children and the youngest was born 2 months ago. They have been my motivation to work hard so that they get all their basic needs. This has brought joy into my life knowing they do not stay without food.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge is financial constraints. My pay in the job is also minimal and most of it goes to meeting household needs. I am paid KES 40 per kilogram of meat sold and it is not guaranteed that I will sell the whole slaughtered cow in a day. This has been demoralizing and I was hoping to start my business to generate more income however I have not been able due to insufficient money.
