"Receiving this money will enable me to buy my own 1-acre piece of land for $350. I currently live with my parents in the same compound hence I'm happy now that with this money I will relocate and be independent. I will then use $200 to build a 2-roomed iron roofed house and also spend $200 in clearing schoolfees arrears for my son who will be completing his high school studies next year"

"I am overjoyed to be receiving this money because it means we can fix our roof because during the rainy season we'd experience alot of leaking from the heavy rains. It also means I can help my family by paying for the childrens fees, buying food for the household as well as investing some money in a small scale business"

"I spent a quarter of transfer on I and my husband's medication. The rest we have planned to use it on building a 22 Iron roofed semi permanent house and furnish it with seats and other household items. This is because we are still living in our parents house."

received a $494 initial payment.
"A half of my first transfer was spent on building a two roomed 24-Iron roofed semi permanent house.Initially, I used to live in an old, tiny and grass thatched house built over 20 years ago when I was was still a youth. Some was spent on a heifer because I had one inherited one from my father and wanted to have my own. This will act as an investment and from the milk production income I will be able to pay school fees for kid's in future. Some was spent on maize seeds farming. This is because it was quite a struggle to buy maize seeds and would rely on short seasoned crops for school fees and buy food. I also bought two sacks of maize meal and latest clothing for my family because Christmas is around the corner The rest I have saved for Christmas day celebrations."

"I spent three-quarter of my transfer on building a 24 Iron roofed semi permanent house because the one I had was an old worn out grass thatched house. It had leaking roof and I had always been beaten by the night cold and would be forced to move to safe corners whenever it rained. Some was spent on latest clothing fashion because the ones I had were old and tattered second hand clothes. The rest was spent on a maize sack because my maize stock was depleted. Earlier on, I used to feed my family from casual labor which was inadequate most of the times."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is building a semi permanent house which wouldn't be possible before because I was struggling to pay school fees for my kids. This is because the one I had, was an old grass thatched house built 42 years ago when I got married. It had leaking roofs, worn out walls and the foundation was already eaten up. During the rainy season the walls would crack and would very cautious at night while I slept. Nowadays, I sleep comfortably like a baby and I am grateful to God for using GiveDirectly to uplift me."

"I spent 80USD of my transfer on plastic chairs and sofa sets because initially I had benches which were uncomfortable.I also spent 180USD on 2000 litres water tank for water storage because rain is unreliable in our place. Some I spent on building a two roomed modern kitchen because the one I had was grass thatched with leaking roofs and the walls were falling apart especially during rainy seasons. Some was spent on purchase of one and a half sacks of maize in order to sustain us longer. This wasn't affordable before because we relief on casual labor like weeding and clothes washing. I also bought the latest clothing fashion and shoes because initially we used to buy second hand clothes which are a quite cheaper. I also bought maize seeds, bought a TV and a solar panel system on a hire purchase in order to keep my girls busy and prevent them from straying to my neighbor's houses."

"The cow that I bought is about to calf and soon I will be milking my own cow to enjoy milk and sell the surplus and from there, I can be able to buy other household supplies like sugar, salt, fuel and cooking oil. My son's house had a leaking roof and whenever it rained, they had to go asking their friends for a place to sleep. Thanks to GiveDirectly transfers, they now have a good roof over their heads."

"I am old and no longer able to smear a house with cow dung like I used to before, so I decided to build a house with an iron roof, a cemented floor and a wooden wall. This will be easier for me to clean and it has always been my dream to have a beautiful house at old age."
