Grace
received a $510 second payment.
"At my old age, I couldn't afford to build a ironed roofed house, but when I received my second transfers from GiveDirectly, I bought building and constructed a two roomed ironed roofed house which is more specious compared to a old grass tached which I was having before. I then bought some foodstuffs and saved KES 1500 for emergency use. I was also previlaged to buy a bed which I couldn't imagine having one. I spent KES 4500 on paying for my medication and buying medicine."

"I am physically disabled due to a certain syndrome that paralyzed my legs and so I cannot be able to walk nor stand on my own. I depend on my kids to fend for me and so receiving this money means a lot to me in the sense that I will finally be able to create a source of income to cater for my needs. I intend to buy one dairy cattle for 30,000 shillings to supplement me with milk and sell the surplus to local customers on a regular basis. I will then keep the rest of the money to cater for my medicine( majorly antibiotics) and food."

Raeli
received a $500 initial payment.
"This transfer has brought a big difference in our lives as a family. We have been able to build another house that we had for a long time desired to have. We hence have enough space for ourselves and our grandchild. I plan to take care of the calf and the two goats that we bought so that they can help us in the future. When the calf grows and reproduces, we will be able to get milk for our consumption and we can sell some. The money from the milk sales will help us with other important things such as buying food and paying for our grandchild’s school fees. The goats will reproduce too and multiply and hence we can sell some of the offsprings whenever we face an emergency. The transfer also helped me in curing myself. I usually have a problem with my waist and I was hence able to go to the hospital and I got the medicine that I usually take. The bag of maize that we bought will sustain us for a while and hence we will not be having worries about where to get money to buy food. The transfer also enabled us to pay school fees for our grandchild and hence we no longer have stress on where to get money to do the above. We were also able to buy new clothes, mattresses, and blankets. We have therefore been able to sleep well and comfortably unlike before when we did not have such items. Thank you GiveDirectly for making life better for us."

"The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is the time I was diagnosed with asmatic condition a few years ago. I was required to go for further check up at a sub county referral hospital but I could not raise fare and medical fee of sh10,000 that was needed. Ihad to stay home and take herbal medicine which is more cheaper."
