How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have bought a dairy cow. I used to buy milk daily and this was so costly for me. I depend on small scale farming, the amount of money that I get through this is so small and cannot meet all the basic needs. I didn't had money to buy a dairy cow. When I received the second transfer I found it wise to invest on dairy farming. I no longer get stress up on where to get the money to buy milk. I have enough milk for my family unlike before. I sell the surplus milk to earn an income to meet other basic household expenditure. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed my living standard.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community to build better houses and to buy dairy cows. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of the second transfer on buying a dairy cow, I also bought cements and I am still planning to renovate my house. Part of the money I used on my medication and the rest of I register for national hospital and insurance fund (NHIF).This will cut the daily cost of going for check ups.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was lunchtime and I was at home having lunch with my family when I received the SMS saying that we had received the money that GiveDirectly had promised us. I was so happy when I saw this and I immediately informed the rest of the family members. They became so happy too on hearing. We celebrated and my neighbors who had received the transfers too joined us in the celebration.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
This transfer has brought a big difference in our lives as a family. We have been able to build another house that we had for a long time desired to have. We hence have enough space for ourselves and our grandchild. I plan to take care of the calf and the two goats that we bought so that they can help us in the future. When the calf grows and reproduces, we will be able to get milk for our consumption and we can sell some. The money from the milk sales will help us with other important things such as buying food and paying for our grandchild’s school fees. The goats will reproduce too and multiply and hence we can sell some of the offsprings whenever we face an emergency. The transfer also helped me in curing myself. I usually have a problem with my waist and I was hence able to go to the hospital and I got the medicine that I usually take. The bag of maize that we bought will sustain us for a while and hence we will not be having worries about where to get money to buy food. The transfer also enabled us to pay school fees for our grandchild and hence we no longer have stress on where to get money to do the above. We were also able to buy new clothes, mattresses, and blankets. We have therefore been able to sleep well and comfortably unlike before when we did not have such items. Thank you GiveDirectly for making life better for us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
This transfer from GiveDirectly has helped me a lot. I bought a calf and two goats that I want to rear. I also built another house for ourselves and I paid the school fees for my grandchild. The transfer also enabled me to buy some food that is, a bag of maize, some clothes for us and our grandchild, two mattresses, and two blankets. I also used part of it to cure myself. We have always wanted to build another house because we have been living in only one house that is small and grass-thatched. The space in the house has hence not been enough for us and our grandchild. I also bought a calf and two goats because we do not have milk for our consumption and we usually buy it. Although we have always desired to do the above developments, we have not been in a position to because we are old and we are no longer able to work. We usually sell a few things that we have grown on our farm such as bananas, avocados, and vegetables to get the money that we use to sustain ourselves. This money that we get from the sale of those goods is only enough for us to buy everyday food and milk. Our children at times support us by sending us money to buy food and other necessities.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means an improved family. We are currently encountering hard economic times and money is scarce. Getting milk for domestic use has become an uphill task and we spend a lot of money to buy milk. We buy a liter of milk a day at Ksh 30 which is costly however, we don't have any source of income. My intention, therefore, is to use Ksh 40,000 of my transfer to buy a dairy cow and use milk mainly for domestic purposes. This way, I will have a healthy household.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Since I am becoming old and weak, I spend the entire day doing household chores. Chatting with my husband in the evening is the joy of my life. This is the time I get encouragement from him and he gives me hope for the future.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
A prolonged period of drought has been the biggest hardship we have faced in life. We experience a minimal amount of rainfall in the year which has lowered crop production hence complicating our life. The land under cultivation is only 0.3 acres in which we grow maize. Due to lack/minimal rainfall, we harvest only 3 bags which is hardly enough to cater for my family of 3. This has compelled us to at times depend on our children for upkeep yet we feel we are becoming a burden to them.
