"Receiving this money means an improved housing system. We have been facing difficult moment with our kitchen especially when it rains because water leaks from the roof, and at times, oozes from the ground. During rainy season, we carry cooking utensils to the main house and my 3 children who sleeps there, seeks accommodation elsewhere within the village. This has brought shame to my family. Our ambition therefore, have been to set up another kitchen costing approximately Ksh 30,000 and thus improving our lives."

"After I am done with the usual household chores, I embark on carrying out farming activities like tilling, watering, weeding, pesticides application, transplanting etc of available crops on my farm or other people's farms. My happiest part of the day is in the evening and this is after I have been called upon by my neighbours for a casual job. This is because on that day I will have the means to buy my family alternative food type unlike the usual ones."

"Lack of household items is my biggest hardship. We have very few pots and buckets which makes life harder to do other chores as a woman in this village especially when going to draw water at the borehole and also do other things such as washing and cleaning."

"I wake at 6 am to do the house chores before going to my work place where I have a shop. I work there till 3 pm where I take a break from work to go and fetch water. I resume work till 6 pm when I go back home. This time marks the end of a tiresome day and the happiest part of my day. I enjoy the evening hours because I get to relax and have time with my family after a busy day."

"The happiest part of my day is in the evening. This is because I am a housewife and spend my morning hours doing household chores and later in the day work in my 0.1 acres of land. In this piece of land, we have grown maize for domestic use and go there to weed, dig, or fence. I use my afternoon hours fetching firewood and water for my household which will take me until late in the evening. Reuniting with my husband in the evening after the day's work rejuvenates my life."

"Now I have a water tank which I didn't have before. I got rough space to store harvested rain water which can sustain us for months. I would still be struggling with fetching water for use at home from a nearby river. This was time consuming and tiresome. I thank GiveDirectly for the transfers which has change our lives."

"The happiest part of my day in the evening. This is when I get to relax and have a good meal with my children at the end of the day. I rarely take lunch inorder to have a satisfactory meal in the evening. I spend the day doing house chores like fetching water and sometimes selling charcoal."

"I have always wanted a source of income for my young family but lack of funds has been derailing me. This money will therefore help me buy 5 goats at a cost of 150 USD. Goat rearing is a bit easier since looking after them does not require a lot of food and water which is a challenge in this region. I will then use 350 USD to build a two bed room house which will be spacious enough unlike the current one."

"The happiest part of my day is in the evening when I am resting after a long day. My day is always packed with tiresome duties such as household chores, burning charcoal and walking long distance in search of water."
