"Receiving this money means improved shelter in my household. I plan to spend $350 to build a two-roomed iron-roofed house since the one we currently live in is deplorable. It leaks in water whenever it rains thus posing health risks to my children. I also intend to buy a dairy cow for $300, thus saving 20 shillings that I usually spend daily in buying 0.5 liters of milk. This also means an increased source of income upon selling milk thus reduced worry level on where to get work to do so as to buy food for my children."

"I spent the second transfer on a cow for rearing. I consider it a way of investment for the future because in the future after it has given birth I will not only benefit from milk but I will also have an additional cow. Part of the money I spent on my bedding so as to replace the old worn out that I had previously. Finally, since accessing water in our area is challenging I bought a storage water tank too."

"I bought a second hand motorcycle with the first transfer but it needed a lot of services to be done for it to operate. When I received the second transfer, I spent it on servicing the the motorcycle. I am glad it is now in good condition and working well. Since we walk for many kilometres in search of water, the motorcycle has come in handy for fetching water both for domestic and livestock use. I also earn income from it since I operate it for taxi services too. Besides that, my children who are in primary school owed the school a huge fee balance so I cleared the balance with part of the second transfer."

"My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have bought a water tank for storing water . I used to walk for a long distance to get clean water for drinking and also for domestic use. This was so tiresome and take much of my time which I could have used to do other chores at home. Currently I have bought a water tank and I no longer walk walk for that long. My children have time to do their homework on time because I no longer sent them to fetch water from the river. During the rainy season my water tank is full and this means I will have enough water for domestic use and for my cows. I have devoted much of my time on my farm. I do plant maize and other horticulture farming. I have enough food for the family and sell the surplus at the market to earn an income to meet other basic household needs."

"The biggest hardship I'm currently facing is of shelter,as you can see i live in a glass fatched house,i live a very pathetic life because during rain season i don't sleep at all because my house leaks so much that all my beddings always soaks in water. Secondly i don't have a permanent source of money such as a job or a business, yes i relay on casual labour and farming but i don't get money that can take us through a month, thats why i can't even afford good clothes, proper sleeping place and food."

"Receiving this money means enough water supply for my family. I'm planning to use 50 dollars to purchase a bicycle for my family. The bicycle will aid in fetching enough water for domestic consumption. I'm planning to use a further 50 dollars to construct a two bedroom house. The two bedroom house is spacious and will serve my family better. In addition to this, am planning to use 180 dollars to buy six goats for domestic rearing. I'll later sale the goats to cater for my children school fees. I'll use the balance to buy enough food for my family. Doing this will give me the peace I have always desired to have."

I used to walk for a long distance to get clear water for drinking and for domestic used. This was taking much of my time which I could have used to do other chores. During the rainy season it's so slippery and this is so risky and one can likely fall down and get injured. My grandchild usually helps but but this is after school. When I received the second transfer I bought a water tank for storing clear water for domestic and for my cows. This has reduce the amount of time that I could used to look for water. I am planning to start a horticulture farming because I have enough water to water it. I will be in a position to have enough vegetables for the family and sell the surplus at the market to earn an income to meet other basic household needs. I am so grateful for the support."

"If it was not for the Give Directly transfers I would not be having cows. I nolonger spend much on water since I use the cows to fetch water. We have to walk for more than 20 KM in search of water. The cows have made it easier because they are able to carry enough water in the cart."

"Our area is drought stricken thus we cannot rely on farming alone for food. This has resulted to the issue of food insecurity since we have to buy most of the commodities. To address this problem, my desire has been to start an irrigation scheme. My farm is close to our community dam and I am not worried about water supply. I will purchase a water pump and pipes to set up the project. Besides, I will build a good house for my family because the current one is in a bad state. Receiving this money therefore means an improvement in our lives."

"GiveDirectly changed my life in that I now have piped water at our doorstep. The money which I had received I spent on buying water pipes and pay for labour for installation and also pay for registration fees. I am so glad that now I have access to clean tap water in our compound. Before, I would spend approximately 4 hours to go and fetch water and come back home. On such a day, I couldn't do any other duty since it's tiresome. Now I can wake up do my house chores and go to the farm. Afterwards, I can do cleaning since we have water connected to our compound."
