Mercy
received a $442 second payment.
"I am a farmer and my husband works at a tea factory in the neighbouring country. Together we are blessed with three children. Building a decent kitchen had been my dream for a long time, though I never had the resources at hand. This made it difficult to achieve that goal. Upon receiving my second transfer, I decided to spend it on building the kitchen where I used KES 25,000. I then bought a dairy cow worth KES 15,000 and lastly, used the remaining amount on clothes and foodstuffs. I am grateful for the support that amazingly lifted my living standards."

"I have a new goal of buying one extra dairy cow. Dairy keeping is one of the main economic activities that we engage in here at my place and I am willing to go all out to make such investments. I know very well that they shall be very helpful to me in paying school fees for my children in future. How I plan to do this is by taking part in a savings plan through a merry go round that we have here at the village. Once I get the contributions, I will use the money to buy this dairy cow."

Lilian
received a $457 second payment.
"When I withdrew the money, I first paid KES 12000.00 for college fees for my child who was on the verge of dropping out of college due to lack of fees. I also KES 15000.00 and 8000.00 for paying school fees for my three and form two respectively. I did this payment because my children had been out of school for a whole term due to school fee balances. I also bought two 5 for KES 15000.00. I preferred the goats over a cow because they can cope with the drought situation in our area. Thereafter, I opted to use the remaining amount to buy some food for my family."

Flora
received a $442 second payment.
"During the peak season, after calving down, we enjoy maximum productivity from the only dairy cow we have on our farm. During the dry seasons, I have been spending a lot to buy milk for my family of five. On receiving the second transfer, I brought in another heifer at KES 24000 that will increase milk production in the future. This Increase will not only cut the cost of buying milk but also be an additional income-generating source when I sell the surplus. I also bought a tenth of an acre worth KES 21000 from my neighbor, who was raising money to fund his father's medical bill. I am glad that the land is just adjacent to our land, and fencing around it was so easy. I spent the last bit of the transfer buying household foodstuff, an extra piece of furniture, and kitchenwares that were missing in our home. I am grateful for the support from GiveDirectly and hope to keep improving the few projects we started."

Kenga
received a $442 second payment.
"I spent part of my second transfer on buying a dairy cow and a pair of oxen at a total of KES 33000. I have been yearning to have them for so many years but I could not afford to have them at my own cost because they were very expensive. I however settled for them because they have numerous benefits as compared to other domestic animals. In a few months to come, I will be getting milk which I am planning to supply to the neighbouring dairy shops and earn a living since for now I just depend on casual jobs. Therefore the cows have for sure brought a very big relief to my life and I believe I no longer strain in raising my five children. I later spent the remaining amount to buy foodstuffs for my family and other household needs."

"I spent KES 35,000 on purchasing a dairy cow. This is to cut the daily cost of buying milk. This was so expensive since I do not have a stable source of income. Currently, I have enough milk for my family. Besides that, I spent KES 10,000 on purchasing building materials and building a poultry house. I am planning on starting a poultry-keeping project. The rest of the money I spent was on food and household items."

Rusi
received a $442 second payment.
"I spent KES 35,000 on purchasing a dairy cow. This was my main focus since I have been buying milk daily and this has been so costly for me. I do not have a stable source of income and I have been struggling with that. Currently, I have enough milk for the family and I no longer worry like before. Apart from that, I spent KES 11,000 on purchasing a water tank for storing clean water for domestic use. I used to go for a long distances to collect water and this was time-consuming and tedious. The remaining amount of money I spent on food and household items."

Gilbert
received a $442 second payment.
"I spent KES 30,000 on purchasing a heifer. I always buy milk daily and this is so costly for me. When my cow reproduces in the next few months I will get enough milk and cut the daily cost which is very expensive. This will enable me to save the money that I would have used to purchase milk for other basic needs of the family. Besides that, I purchased five goats. This is a good investment since goats reproduce twice per year and help whenever there is an emergency since they can be sold easily. The remaining amount of money I spent on a bed, mattress, and food for the family."

Ziporah
received a $442 second payment.
"When we received our transfers, we were able to do a lot with it including building a brand new house and buying a dairy cow too. Having built a main house, we were left with a very old kitchen that is grass thatched. It is for this very reason that I have a new goal of building a new house that will serve as a kitchen. How we plan to do this is by selling one of the cows that we own to help us start up this project. By doing this, we shall have done a face lift to the compound and made our home more comfortable."

Bendera
received a $442 second payment.
"I have a new goal that I didn't have before receiving the cash transfer which is to own dairy cows. This type of farming can do so well in my region since the climate is favourable. Therefore having them will empower me to start supplying milk in different dairy shops hence earning an income. The cash will enable me to pay fees for my kids unlike now whereby I have been depending on the charcoal business which is a seasonal one."
