How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After investing almost all the second transfer to my children's education, I developed an entrepreneurial goal. Soon, I aim to start a shop business where I shall sell fast-moving goods such as food items. I opt to start the business so that it could generate some income to sustain my family since I do not have a defined job.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The organization restored my happiness and respect which was no longer served to me by my neighbors. Due to poverty, our life was pathetic. I was a laughing stock in the village after all my children dropped out of school. I am grateful that all my children resumed their studies due to GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I withdrew the money, I first paid KES 12000.00 for college fees for my child who was on the verge of dropping out of college due to lack of fees. I also KES 15000.00 and 8000.00 for paying school fees for my three and form two respectively. I did this payment because my children had been out of school for a whole term due to school fee balances. I also bought two 5 for KES 15000.00. I preferred the goats over a cow because they can cope with the drought situation in our area. Thereafter, I opted to use the remaining amount to buy some food for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I have five children, four of whom are in school. Of the four, two had fee arrears totaling KES 30000. I never knew where to get the money and I was afraid that they would be sent home again. But this time I will not know what to tell the management for them to be allowed back to class as there was no possibility to raise it. Some of my neighbors would mock and tell me that my children would drop out of school. So, the receipt of these funds made me feel relieved and that my prayers had been answered as I was now able to settle it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I earn very little from my charcoal manufacturing and street food vending business. My husband's salary as a security guard is also not much. Getting my 4 children's school fees and also putting food on the table was a struggle for us. Every day, I would pray God opens doors for us so we could stop languishing in poverty. A state that has had some of our neighbors mock us and they would even say that my children will drop out of school. However much this disheartened me, I never dwelled much on it. I was hopeful that one day there would be a turnaround in our life. Which happened after receiving funds from give directly. Unburdened is how I can describe myself to be. Most of my debts including my children's school fee arrears have been settled. We can now comfortably afford a meal and I have 10 goats and 5kids in my compound. I acknowledge it will even get better with my next transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband works as a watchman whilst I am a street food vendor and a charcoal manufacturer. On a daily basis, I make around KES 200. At the end of the month, I would add my profits to that of his then collaboratively, we would plan on how to spend the funds. Although, it was not much and often we would be late on the school fees payment. Two of my children at the time when I was receiving the funds had accrued areas of KES 30000. So, I used the funds to settle the debt, and whatever balance I had left, I utilized to improve my livestock farming business by adding five goats making the total count be 15, 10 goats, and 5 kids.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Though I did not get a chance to go to school, I still believe that education is power. This say has encouraged me to take my 5 children to school no matter the challenges of school fees due to the kind of job I do ( food kiosk business). Receiving these transfers means good education for them (1 is in university and 4 in secondary school). Currently, they have fees arrears of up to KES 80,000. I am planning to clear all the fees balance and this will give them a chance to study with ease because they will not be sent out for fees. I hope that they will pass and later get employment and support us. Also, I will use the remaining amount to invest in my business which is the source of income.
What is the happiest part of your day?
It was in August last year when my elder daughter graduated from her vocational course ( dressmaking). This brought a lot of joy to my family because it is going to be an additional source of income. She is in the process of owning her sewing machine and opening a tailoring shop so that she can start running her business.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Raising school fees for my 5 children is the biggest challenge I am currently facing. I am running a food kiosk that earns me a profit of KES 300 in a day. This amount is too little to cater to my family's needs such as food and school fees. This has made my children remain with a huge school fee balance something that stress me a lot.
