Fatuma
received a $450 second payment.
"My immediate goal is getting my youngest into colleague. He would love to be a doctor and I am striving to make his dream come true. While at it, I would love to buy cows for dairy farming and have milk both for sale, and for consumption at home."

Karisa
received a sixth payment.
"When I got the promise that I would receive cash from GiveDirectly, I knew this was a perfect opportunity for me to transform my life. In the coming year and beyond, I aspired to start a goat-rearing business by purchasing a goat at $25 every month. I have four goats so far and plan to have several in the future and possibly also include cows. This is because of the ease with how they mature fast and when the need arises, I sell."

"GiveDirectly earns all its praise because of how it impacts and changes lives. In addition to all I did with the funds, we also bought 2 male cows! How can one argue with the reality that no other organisation has given beneficiaries such resources and left it to them to plan. I ask that GiveDirectly continues it's fine works, now and always"

Dhahabu
received a $435 second payment.
"I had always want to keep livestock. This is because they reproduce and you can sell them incase of an emergency. I used kshs 16,000 to buy a cow and kshs 15,000 to buy 3 goats. I'm sure they'll reproduce and I'll benefit from consuming and selling their milk. I bought 1 bale of maize flour, sugar, beans, cooking oil and vegetables (these were in frequent small portions, I can't tell their exact quantity) worth kshs 13,000. I used kshs 5,000 to pay school fees for my 3 primary school children. My house was at the verge of collapsing, so I bought 3 bags of cement @ kshs 750 and sand worth kshs 1,500. I paid kshs 2,000 for labour and I'm glad that my house was repaired."

Sidi
received a $435 second payment.
"I used kshs 6,000 to build a house for my son. Before, he didn't have his own room where he could sleep but thanks to Give Directly, he now has a house. I also paid school fees worth kshs 30,000 for my son who is in form 1. I also wished to own a cow which can be giving me milk, so I bought a cow worth kshs 26,000. I'm already milking it. I sell some of the milk and consume some. I'm very grateful for this transfer because it has changed my life."

Sidi
received a $450 second payment.
"After divorcing my spouse 15 years ago over a household conflict, I was forced to return to my parental home with my small daughter. Life has not been easy since I assumed the responsibility of bringing up our kid alone. The transfer from GiveDirectly was very helpful in fulfilling my dreams of being a landowner. I spent $250 of my recent transfer to complete the payment of a one-acre piece of land that cost $700 in total. I had started buying it with first aid. At the moment, I am very happy owning land and planning to construct a home as well as use it for crop farming. In addition, I used $170 to start dairy farming by purchasing one local dairy cow that will supply enough milk for my 4 grandchildren. Currently, I am forced to purchase milk daily, which is quite expensive. The remaining amount supported me in the education of my 4 grandchildren by clearing their fee arrears."

Pendo
received a $435 second payment.
"I am an unemployed mother of five children and my husband makes and sells palm wine as his source of income. The lack of a reliable source of income and my unemployment has been our major challenge. I have been living in a small single room with my children. As they grow, it is uncomfortable to live with all of them in a tiny space. I spent my first transfer on building a two-roomed house and a verandah, and the rest of the funds paid school fees for my three children and food for the family. I spent my next transfer of $180 to buy a cow and used the rest of the $350 to open a grocery. Part of the cash was used to build a vegetable stall and bought different vegetables to start with. Starting a business had been on my mind for the longest time and GiveDirectly allowed me to do so with the transfers."

"The support I received from GiveDirectly changed a lot in my home and inspired me to make plans, despite the fact that the cost of living has recently been very high. A move into subsistence or animal farming has been difficult in our region due to the drought, which has also been damaging. I have been searching for better ways to invest at the present without spending a lot of money and possibly losing money in the end. My current preference is pig and bee farming, and because I was working on a pig project before getting married, I plan to get started soon and take advantage of the cheap feeds that are readily accessible. This initiative appeals to me because there is a ready market for it and because, unlike cows, which need on grass, they are less dependent on rainfall."
