How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My goal is to set up a big shop. A central location where I can show case and sell my deras, mabuyu and cakes, all under one roof and to all my clients. This would mean more revenue and more self sufficiency for me and my household. Ultimately, my end goal though, is to ensure my children have a better life for themselves than what their father and I have had.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly earns all its praise because of how it impacts and changes lives. In addition to all I did with the funds, we also bought 2 male cows! How can one argue with the reality that no other organisation has given beneficiaries such resources and left it to them to plan. I ask that GiveDirectly continues it's fine works, now and always
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We have been in need of a ceiling for the single room we rent out for KES. 2,500 in Mtwapa , inclusive of electricity. At the time of receiving the funds, I was pregnant and in hospital, and part of the funds went to covering transport from the Navy hospital, not to mention catering for school fees. I have 2 kids, the eldest of whom is in Grade 4 at Oxford Academy, currently in Grade 1 and needing KES. 3, 500 per term, while my youngest is yet to enlist at school. My husband is a KDF officer, posted in Garrissa and comes ,to to see us every end month, once he is paid. Other than catering for fees, food and clothing for the baby, we bought food for the baby's visitor's. Traditionally family always visits the new born, and these food stuff were used to host said family and guests. Since then, my baby is now 5 months old and both my husband and I wouldn't have managed to do all we have done , between what I make from selling deraz making mabuyus, baking and what he manages to bring home from the disciplined forces. GiveDirectly truly changed out lives, like nothing before has!

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Receiving the transfers meant so much to me and my family. I was having some rest under the tree as I was unwell that afternoon. Suddenly, I had so many knocks at my door, they were from neighbourhood, apparently most of them got mpesa notification and wanted to incquire from me if it was indeed true as most of them are illiterate and were not sure if it was a genuine mpesa notification. I had to wake up and having confirmed the mpesa notification made me feel better for the better part of that afternoon.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I nolonger get worried about the future of my unborn child. I have managed to buy all the things that I need before my delivery day, and cannot wait to meet my unborn child. Before the transfers, I had planned to buy second hand goods for my unborn, of which is not the case at the moment as I have managed to put all the things required .
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am an expectant mother, so the transfers came at the right time, I spent Kshs 15000 to buy the unborn goods like clothes, soaps, baby coat and beddings. I am also a mother of three, two girls and one boy, I used Kshs 10,000 to buy books and to pay school fees for my children of class five, three and two .I had debts in school and managed to clear part of debts as well of Kshs 5,000. Getting regular meals had been the greatest challenge in our family. I used Kshs 10,000 to stock dry goods , this will last my family for approximately two months. I thank Give Directly for the transfers as my family have been having regular and balanced diet since I received the transfers. I saved the balance of Kshs 10,000 for any emergency that may arise in the future, after delivery , I might consider starting up a business, whereby I am planning to start a grocery business as it has a very high demand .

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My husband works in the disciplined forces. He is away from home most of the time. I do not have a job. I would like to start a small business selling clothes in the town center. This will keep me busy and help generate more income. I am excited at the thought of leaving home every morning for work. We probably will use KES 100,000 as capital and hope for good returns.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am expectant. I feel overwhelmed. I am happy that soon I will bring forth another child to this family. We are all looking forward to receiving this bundle of joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The only thing I am struggling with is boredom. When the children are in school and my husband is away for work, the void gets to me. I'll be glad to start a business that will allow me to interact with people.
