How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My main goal is to work and invest more in my grocery business. Every penny I make from my business will be mainly for the education of my five children. My biggest accomplishment in the future is to educate all five of them and have them complete their high school and join college.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is one reason I could build a bigger house that would accommodate my children. The funds have allowed me to open my business. I have no criticism of GiveDirectly other than my request that they would continue enrolling more villages in Kilifi county and help in eradicating poverty.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am an unemployed mother of five children and my husband makes and sells palm wine as his source of income. The lack of a reliable source of income and my unemployment has been our major challenge. I have been living in a small single room with my children. As they grow, it is uncomfortable to live with all of them in a tiny space. I spent my first transfer on building a two-roomed house and a verandah, and the rest of the funds paid school fees for my three children and food for the family. I spent my next transfer of $180 to buy a cow and used the rest of the $350 to open a grocery. Part of the cash was used to build a vegetable stall and bought different vegetables to start with. Starting a business had been on my mind for the longest time and GiveDirectly allowed me to do so with the transfers.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 8 in the morning when I was at the farm then I received the message notification. Without wasting time, I decided to check its content. On checking, I realized that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly, they had debited my first transfers as promised. I felt so happy for I know would finally achieve most of my goals.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life that I can proudly talk of I the fact that I now own a semi-permanent spacious house. I have been having h desire to construct one for so my yers, but due to the poverty life that had stricken my household, I could not afford it. The previous house was in a deplorable state, and it could not accommodate some of my family members. Therefore they were forced to sleep at our relative's houses which is far away from the village. During the rainy seasons, I also had to seek shelter from friends since the house had a leaky roof. The coming of GiveDirectly into my life transformed everything positively. I am now living happily and pecifuly with all my family members which have been my long time dream.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some building materials which include, iron sheets, several building poles, timber, and thread. I bought all these with an intention of constructing a new house since the previous one was in poor conditioning very small. With the remaining amount of money, I bought sufficient foodstuffs for my family and decent clothes to replace the old ones.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My house at the moment is not in good condition and I have always wished to construct a new one. Due to financial problems, this dream has never come through and I usually feel my life is a shame to me. My plan when I get the cash from GiveDirectly, I intend to use 30,000 shillings to build a new house in order to earn the respect that I have lost for long. This will change my life to the better and eventually a happy family, a life that I have always wished to live.
What is the happiest part of your day?
After spending the whole day doing my casual job of selling charcoal, I return home in the evening when I am very tired. Despite being tired, it is at this time when I get relaxed and share some food with my family. This gives me the feeling of happiness something that makes evening the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraints is the most hardship that I have ever faced in my life. This has forced me to spend my life in a house that is half open at the roof. In addition, my family pass through difficulties in terms of food and sometimes I seek help from my neighbours. This has really robbed my joy and I am not a happy person.
