"Raising school fees for my children has been the biggest challenge to me. I have two sons who are both in school, one in form one and the other in std 3. Most of the time my kids are out of school because of unpaid fees. This has been very hard since a time's they really ask a lot of questions I can not answer as a parent and they feel left of when others go to school."

"Receiving this money means good education, medication for my two sons and self employment. I have 2 sons who are 4 years old. At this age, they ready to join school. I am planning to use KES 10,000 to pay school fees for my two sons. One of my sons has a medical condition ( head complications) I planning to use approximately KES 20,000 for my son's diagnosis process. My son's medical condition makes me very sad, sometimes my son can just collapse for more than 30 minutes. Being unemployed, I also want to start a business of selling vegetables in the community. I will use KES 5,000 to build a small house for the business. I will then use KES, 5,000 to buy the vegetables and resell them at a profit. I am also planning to buy a new bed and a mattress for my sons at a cost of KES 10,000. My sons are now old enough to sleep in a separate room. I will save the remaining amount of the transfer for my sons' education as they grow."

"Receiving this money means a decent life and good education for my last born. For the past 5 years, I have been sleeping on a bed without a mattress. This has made me experience body aches every morning I wake up. I am planning to use KES 10,000 to purchase a new bed and a mattress. I am sure the problem of having body aches every morning will be gone. I also struggle to cater for my family's needs. I stay with my son who is the last born. He is in primary school ( class 6). My main occupation is charcoal burning. I get approximately KES 5,000 per month. This amount is not enough to sort out all of our needs which includes the School fees for my son. I am planning to use KES 20,000 to buy 5 goats. For me, the goats will be my source of income in the coming years. I will start selling goat milk and even the goats when they multiply. I am a 46 year old widow who is no longer strong enough for the charcoal burning business,I will save the rest of the money and use it sparingly for my family's needs and that of my son's education."

"Receiving this money means self employment, decent housing and good education for my children. The weather condition in this area is unfavorable for crop production, I am planning to start a livestock production enterprise. I will use a total of KES 30,000 to purchase 9 female goats and one male goat. I believe these goats will make my dream of self employment come true, I will be the one in charge of the whole project. With time, the goats will multiply and increase in number. I will start selling the goats to butcheries in Bamba town. I will use the income I will be getting to sort my family's needs and the education for my children. KES 40,000 will go into the construction of a new bigger house for my family. The house I currently live in is in a poor condition and very small. Sleeping with my four children in the same room makes me very uncomfortable. I will then use the remaining amount to pay school fees for my children and save the rest of the money."

"Receiving this money means good education to my 3 children. I came back from my matrimonial home after separating from my husband 4 years ago. He was the breadwinner to our family and since then life has not been easy. I plan to practice livestock keeping. I will spend KES 70,000 to purchase 20 ingenious goats. This is going to be a source of income for my family of 4 members because will sell them at a profit price in the future and educate my children who are in the lower classes. Other than that, I will invest the remaining amount to start a food kiosk business which will also add income to our family and enable me to meet our basic needs such as school fees."

"I spent part of the money I received from GiveDirectly on building a better kitchen. I had a small grass thatched kitchen which was leaking from inside. During the rainy season it was so stressful because cooking was not easy. I paid KES 15,000 for my school fees. Currently I am studying a diploma in early childhood education. I go to study during the holidays. I paid KES 5,000 for my child education. The rest of the money I bought food, plastic chairs and clothes for my family members. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard."

"Receiving this money from GiveDirectly means a descent and a safer house for my family. We currently stay in an old house with a leaking roof and damaged windows. Moreover, the walls are now weak meaning the house might collapse anytime. This is very risky in as far as the security of my family members is concerned. I am planning to use KES 50,000 to renovate my house to a better standard. This will give me the peace I have always desired. I will use the balance to pay for my children school fees."

"With my family of 7, it has been a struggle making ends meet as I have never gotten a reliable job to earn me enough income to take good care of the whole household. I was lucky to have taken tailoring classes some years back and recently managed to obtain a sewing machine that had been keeping us going. My husband on the other side has also been working hard on his small business of buying chickens from the village and taking them to the nearby market points where he can sell at a profit. On receiving this transfer, we were glad as we knew that a lot will come out of it. I spent the first KES30000 on holding back the neighbor's cow that we had been rearing on our field as he needed to sell to raise school fees for his daughter. This had kept our family for quite a long time as we have not been buying milk since it produced just enough for our domestic usage. I also managed to pay KES5000 for my son currently in secondary school, obtained enough household foodstuff that will take us for the next one month at KES 4050, household piece of furniture and clothing for my children at KES6000, construction post in preparation to put up a new house at 6000KES, and also spaying pump that has been useful in crops, and livestock protection."

"The biggest difference in my daily life after receiving the money is the clearance of the already piling debts in various schools where my children are currently attending. Even though I did a lot alongside the school fees payment with the money, I still feel that the biggest burden I had was ensuring that I keep all my four children in school without having them miss any exam or defer a semester because of lack of school fees. I am glad and working hard to ensure that before the next payment, I will have saved enough to pay part of the total amount."

"For almost a year since I completed the construction of my 3 roomed rental house. It has not been rented to full capacity because poor condition of the latrine. I spent KES.11,600 to purchase 20 bags of cement, I was to use it to construct a toilet for the house since most of my tenants were complaining and some had already abandoned it for better ones. Previously, they were forced to use my neighbor latrine something that annoyed them. I also used KES 4,000 to support my kid's educational needs since they were always staying at home due to lack of school fees. Watching my kids missing their classes bothered me a lot . Furthermore, I purchase new bedding at KES 5000. Initially, I was using an old and own out mattress which was not comfortable to sleep on. Moreover, I was embarrassed wherever I receive guests because I had to spent my nights on the floor. With the remaining amount, I am planning to improve the condition of the rental house by constructing pillars so it may be durable."
