How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a child who will sit for his final National Primary Examination next month as he prepares to move to the next level which is a secondary school in May this year. I, therefore, have an additional goal to ensure that he joins secondary school on time. To achieve this, I have already started saving some money to ensure that once the results are out he enrolls in secondary school. I did not get a chance to further my education beyond lower primary school and I would not wish for my children to go through the same. My parents could afford to take me to school, but they let alcohol take over them. It will be pride to see my children excel in life.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Give Directly is doing great work in helping people without any form of discrimination. This is a great way of impacting people's lives. I can attest that most children have managed to enroll in various institutions at different levels including those who had lost hope of ever furthering their education.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 10000 of my second transfer to purchase decent bedding both for my children and me. I had a small worn-out mattress that was not so comfortable sleeping on while my children literally slept on the ground in a small mat. My household members sleeping conditions bothered me but I had no means to improve them. The little income I earned from the casual work could not afford new decent bedding. Having my family members having decent bedding makes me a proud father and husband. I still have KES 40000 set aside for my son's school fees. He is set to sit for his final primary national examinations in March thereafter he will join secondary school. My goal in life moving forward is to help my children excel in life. A smaller portion of the money I spent on various foodstuffs for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Being a casual laborer, my day starts with walking around the village looking for small jobs to do. I had just arrived home since I had missed a job at the construction site. I was relaxing in my house while taking breakfast when I heard a loud message notification on my phone. I remember vividly it was around 9:50 am, I was curious to know the content of the message. After checking, I was shocked to learn that it was the Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I felt extremely happy since I had not received such an amount of money. I informed the rest of my family members and we jointly celebrated and thank GiveDirectly for fulfilling their promises.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am living a stress-free life after completing the construction of the latrine for my rental house. I am optimistic that my 3 rooms will get tenants something that will earn me an income of KES 500 per room every month. I will be able to meet the educational needs of my children easily using this income. They will no longer miss classes due to lack of fees something that will restore my happiness and assurance of a better future for my children.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For almost a year since I completed the construction of my 3 roomed rental house. It has not been rented to full capacity because poor condition of the latrine. I spent KES.11,600 to purchase 20 bags of cement, I was to use it to construct a toilet for the house since most of my tenants were complaining and some had already abandoned it for better ones. Previously, they were forced to use my neighbor latrine something that annoyed them. I also used KES 4,000 to support my kid's educational needs since they were always staying at home due to lack of school fees. Watching my kids missing their classes bothered me a lot . Furthermore, I purchase new bedding at KES 5000. Initially, I was using an old and own out mattress which was not comfortable to sleep on. Moreover, I was embarrassed wherever I receive guests because I had to spent my nights on the floor. With the remaining amount, I am planning to improve the condition of the rental house by constructing pillars so it may be durable.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means completing my rental house project. I had earlier started it but due to my financial status I couldn't complete it. Although it's a mud house some of the teachers at Lwandani Primary School have been longing to move in. This is because it's convenient for them and they don't have to live very far from the school. Upon receiving this money I will use part of it to achieve my dream of rental house ownership. This will also mean an increased income of not less than 3000 shillings every month.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My life was full of frustrations but it changed in 2019 when I received Jesus Christ. This has always given me joy as I tend to worry less about my problems. His presence gives me happiness every time and I am always jovial.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Being the sole provider in a family of 11 is quite challenging. This because I do not have a reliable income as I depend on short term tenders. Sometimes I can spend almost 2 months without a job. On a good day I earn around 800 shillings but this amount is insufficient because the family is big. It is quite difficult to meet all our needs and sometimes I feel like a failure. In this regard I can say financial instability is my biggest hardship.
