How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
We don't have any new goals as of now because our son just joined secondary school and we will have to struggle to get his school fees. We were able to pay the money that he owed the school with part of the transfer that we got. We will however have to find a way to get his school fees moving forward. I am a small-scale farmer and I usually grow tomatoes for sale. My husband is a businessman where he buys and sells chickens. We don't make much money from these income-generating activities but we plan to save part of the money that we will get and use it in paying for our son's school fees.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well by coming up with this program of helping the neediest in society. The lives of the people in my community have been uplifted because they used the money in making so many developments such as building houses, buying livestock, paying school fees, starting businesses, and so much more. There are some things that I will however recommend to GiveDirectly. I wish that they could consider helping those girls who are still living at home and have children. This is because those girls are single parents and they struggle on their own to fend for their children. Another thing that I think they should change is how they work. I think they should work on their own when they reach the village and not to involve the village elder. This is because the village elder might have an influence and this may result in some people not being enrolled yet they were deserving to be enrolled.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent most of the money that we got in the second transfer on building another house. We have always wanted to construct another house but due to lack of enough money, we have not been able to. I am a small-scale farmer and I usually grow tomatoes for sale. My husband is a businessman where he buys and sells chickens. The money that we make from these income-generating activities has not been enough to make any developments because most of it usually goes to the payment of school fees for my son. We are therefore so much grateful to GiveDirectly for coming through for us and enabling us to achieve what seemed to be a dream for us.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
As I was coming back from the river where I normally fetch water for our domestic use, I received a message that notified me of the anticipated transfer from GiveDirectly. I was so excited that even though I was carrying a 20-liter bot on my back that normally keeps me relaxing at some intervals, I did not take it off my back that day as I even moved a little bit faster than usual. I was eager to relay the good news to the other family members as we had plans in place and was sure that it was indeed the money I was expecting from GiveDirectly. Everyone was equally excited to receive the news at home, and my children could not resist reminding me that I needed to obtain some new clothes as I had promised them.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Being the rightful owner of the cow that has seen us through hard times and providing enough milk without us paying any coin to the owner is the biggest difference in my daily life. The owner had been on the verge of selling it out several times but we had been begging him hard to still wait as we had hopes of raising enough money to pay him. It was such a humbling of him to be that patient till recently when we made the payment after we received the transfer, and I am glad that I can now keep both the calves it will be bearing as I enjoy other benefits coming along.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With my family of 7, it has been a struggle making ends meet as I have never gotten a reliable job to earn me enough income to take good care of the whole household. I was lucky to have taken tailoring classes some years back and recently managed to obtain a sewing machine that had been keeping us going. My husband on the other side has also been working hard on his small business of buying chickens from the village and taking them to the nearby market points where he can sell at a profit. On receiving this transfer, we were glad as we knew that a lot will come out of it. I spent the first KES30000 on holding back the neighbor's cow that we had been rearing on our field as he needed to sell to raise school fees for his daughter. This had kept our family for quite a long time as we have not been buying milk since it produced just enough for our domestic usage. I also managed to pay KES5000 for my son currently in secondary school, obtained enough household foodstuff that will take us for the next one month at KES 4050, household piece of furniture and clothing for my children at KES6000, construction post in preparation to put up a new house at 6000KES, and also spaying pump that has been useful in crops, and livestock protection.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
We are a family consisting of five children, two sons and three daughters ,our house is small and its not enough to accommodate all of us.Building a house is expensive and our income doesn't allow us to meet the cost.My children usually go to sleep with their grandparents. This expose them especially my teenage girls since they can easily be waylaid and lured by men on their way to the grandparents house. In the process they might get pregnant at their tender age. Our plan is to expand our house to at least 3 rooms so that one of the room can be used by our girls. Consequently, we will be able to be close with them and also have umple time to study during preps. We expect to spend approximately USD 400 and the rest we use to buy a dairy cow.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is in the afternoon. This is because by that time I will be done with my household chores and only doing a bit of tailoring work which I enjoy the most .
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
We have a small parcel of land and therefore our farm production is low . The size our land is approximately 0.8 acres, we depend mostly on maize farming for subsistence purpose. As a result of this low production we have to buy maize to supplement our production. A times we hardly afford to get all the three meals and sometimes we skip lunch so that we get something for supper to avoid my children going to bed hungry.
