Muenda
received a $399 initial payment.
"Being in a polygamous marriage and being the first wife has been quite tough on my end for years. My spouse has been the breadwinner for the two families, which was a challenge for him, hence the unending crises. The condition of my house has not been good at all, and I have always lived in fear that it might collapse at any time. I am now a happy mother and thankful to GiveDirectly for coming to my rescue because I managed to build a very beautiful, spacious house that can accommodate my family. My children no longer have to go from one house to another to seek shelter, as they used to. There is peace in my house, thanks to GiveDirectly."

Thabu
received a $399 initial payment.
"For the last two weeks, my four children, who are in grades six, five, four, and three, have been staying at home due to the accumulated arrears. As a mother, it pained me the most, and I had vowed to do any job that came my way to raise the cash needed. Therefore, after receiving it, I had to pay the whole amount to avoid distractions. They are now happy and ambitious to be in school with the rest. On top of that, I settled a loan of $80 to a microfinance group. I now feel content as well as thankful that I have peace of mind. Also, I am positive that I can be granted another loan if the need arises. Additionally, I bought a few building materials, which I will use to build a new house considering that the current one is very small. Furthermore, it was serving as a kitchen, so you can imagine the smoke. This has been affecting my children, and they used to cough terribly. Also, there was no privacy at all since the house could not accommodate the nine children. In the next month, I will feel relieved once my house is completed. Finally, due to the prolonged drought that we used to experience, I decided to buy plenty of food, which sustained us for almost three weeks."

Shida
received an initial payment.
"I had finished preparing supper at around 8 when I was informed by one of my sons that I had received my first cash transfer. At first, I thought it was a prank, but after confirming it for the second time, I realized that it was true. I jumped up and down like a baby; you can imagine the excitement. I was positive that with the transfers I would be able to build my dream house."

Kadzo
received a $399 initial payment.
"My five children have been away from school for a while, one in secondary school and four in primary school. This is because I have not been able to raise the outstanding $110. As a mother, this situation has been draining and breaking my heart. It has always been my joy to see them learn so they can prosper in life. Therefore, I am grateful to see them back in class without any disturbances until the year's end. On top of that, I was able to purchase five goats for a total of $160. These will be the assets that I can rely on any time I encounter a financial crisis. I am certain that they will increase in number within a shorter period of time since they can strive so well in my region. Also, I planned to change my habitation, and I settled into building a new home instead. I, therefore, bought a few materials for a start and waited for the second transfer to finish up this project. The initial one was built in a sample area; hence, it has been unstable and almost collapsed. Furthermore, it could barely accommodate my ten family members."

Fahani
received a $399 initial payment.
"Owning the goats feels like a blessing to me and my family at large. I am optimistic that these goats will allow me to generate money at any time to meet any pressing needs. First, the issue of raising school fees and providing food for the family is well sorted. Before then, I couldn't afford to own even one since they were a bit costly. For now, all three of my children are still in primary school, and by the time they join a high school or even college, the goats will have multiplied in number. Therefore, it will be easier for me to support them throughout their educational journey. This is therefore a lifetime investment, for which I can't thank GiveDirectly enough."

Furaha
received a $25 tenth payment.
"My biggest challenge right now is that I have to occasionally squeeze my belongings into my small, two-room shelter. Even worse, when guests arrive and I have nowhere for them to stay, it's really embarrassing. Because of this issue, I intend to construct an extension of a single room to make it more spacious. Every month, I will set aside a portion of the transfer to purchase building supplies such as iron sheets. To accomplish this goal, I plan to buy 15 iron sheets and some building poles."

Karisa
received a tenth payment.
"The best investment I can think of making at my age is purchasing some livestock. Since I have spent the majority of my life relying on temporary employment, I am slowly catching up with my years and have no reliable assets. Since it's difficult to find even the occasional construction jobs I used to work, I intend to try my hand at purchasing and raising livestock, such as goats and, if funds allow, cows. I currently have three goats that I got from the transfer. I intend to save up over the coming months and at the very least purchase a goat. Due to the fact that I do not have a reliable source of income, my goal is to establish a herd and be able to meet my financial needs through the livestock."
